Why is there a Nikon/Canon debate?

I've always asked myself this question? I'm more of a lurker than a poster on tpf but have to say enjoy the topics which arise everyday!

However on a regular basis I stumble across a thread whereby someone has had a little dig at either brand, I'm sure its friendly banter at the end of day but can't help but think, why do some canon users have it in for nikon users and vice versa? Is it becoming almost like football team rivalry?

At the end of the day, you chose your equipment and there must be reasons behind this. Both brands have there pros and cons but why take it out on each other? Tbh both Canon and Nikon deserve respect! No?

Maybe this is just a naive approach to the topic but I'd like to know your opinion?

I think to most people it's just a laugh, canon, nikon, olympus, sony, pentax and any others I've forgotten to mention (sorry) are pretty much as good as each other, with each excelling in different fields, for example, Canon have the lead on their high ISO handling (up to the D3 & D300 anyway)

Thats my take on it, it's not serious in any way... at least not to me.

friendly banter, nothing more, nothing less. Same goes for Atari ST / Amiga, XBox 360 / Playstation 3 - each convinced their own choice is superior and blindly refuses to be convinced by a counter argument.

The answer is quite simple, everyone knows Canon is best ;)
 
I don't know how it started, but most of the time it is just friendly banter. The times when it annoys me is when people offer recommendations based on the brand they favour rather than the best solution for the person asking for advice.
 
It is just friendly banter, other places I have known have full blown arguments about which brand is better but at the end of the day it is all about the photographer & less about the equipment. The often repeated statement about how professionals with P&S cameras can get better results that someone with a pro DSLR is certainly something to consider.

A lot of people will have an inbuilt need to justify their own choices & I think that that's where the majority of the problems lie - if people spent more time out & about with their cameras though then it's be a different story :lol:

(Everyone knows that It's all of those terrible Olympus users to blame really :lol:)

In most circumstances there isn't much difference between the brand, and people need to understand that it is how you use it. Thats the message I try to give when ever the topic comes up.
 
My father-in-law is a Canon man through and through, and I have seen a few Nikons (film) in my time and recently a D40. We have loads of fun comparing images, discussing the similarities and differences and teasing each other about which is superior - life would be boring without the friendly rivalry.

Besides, it all started because some Canon owner bought the wrong camera and then tried to justify their choice...:lol:

Same thing happens in all aspects of brand ownership....

Lotus vs Subaru is a favourite of mine. Don't forget the Apple vs PC debate. The ultimate has to be the Nintendo vs Sony vs Microsoft....

A lot of the time its friendly banter, and other times, people want to feel like they have bought the superior product as this will reflect on their superior brain power and wallet size.

It's called Superiority Complex, I certainly suffer from it to a certain degree when out and about in my Lotus! Quite right too, its better than everyone elses "wannabe" sports car :)

See how easy it is?!!!
 
Mostly it is banter, after all the badge on the kit is often the only real separating factor on a board like this to poke a bit of fun at.

There are always some people though that take it all too seriously, or too far. It happens in all clubs, groups and forums and I think it comes down to insecurity and what I can only politely describe as "smallness". After all, sadly it seems to only ever be blokes that do this. :shrug:
 
One is VHS and one is Betamax ~ you choose which is which :lol:

(actually Beta was/is much better than VHS and is still going today in Broadcast TV.....:shrug:)

Well the BRAND aspect is bloke only I would say. However, Hair Colour, WEIGHT, how many boyfriends etc etc is the female equivelent!!! My wife loves to bitch about other girls and vice versa.

With regards to Smallness, when Jeremy Clarkson test drive the Lotus, here is a quote:

"Getting to the playground, however, can be unnerving. Because it’s so tiny you feel dwarfed, even by people in Peugeots. After a day in London I developed small-man syndrome, squealing away from the lights and cutting people up just to assert myself. "

I had a quick look on the Canon only forum and they quite catagorically state "Canon is the best brand"

You can't argue with that now, can you!
 
It all started because Canon shooters got jealous that Nikon cameras are so much better... :woot: :lol:

Being honest, it's not done by real photographers, real photographers don't have time for arguing over whos camera is best, they're too busy shooting ;) I've commented many times, that this whole x vs y really is a waste of time, go out and take some pictures :bang:

I'm surprised no one has compared it to the Intel/AMD debate. Or even the Apple/MS debate.

I always let people get on with it and I tend to toe the line: "It's not the equipment it's how you use it" So go forth and use it to the best of your ability after all, they are only a box with a hole in the front of it :lol:


That said Canon is the best ;) :lol: :p
 
I think this debate will hot up a little as Nikon have brought out 2 really good cameras (d3 d300) AT LAST… and canon have brought out a real spanner (1d mklll)
competition between this two will always be good for us, and lead to better products at lower prices, and we should encourage this with banter.

Ps Canon make better lenses then anyone else in Japan…

I kinda always thought it was a case of buy a Canon if ure into Portraiture - buy a Nikon if you want to get all cold and take Landscapes ;)

I've never met girls who talk about such things :shrug:

when my g/f's get together we're always trying to prove if the Nikon is better than the Canon....and, of course, the Canon is the best - or is that the Nikon... I can't remember :lol:

I think the point is there is no "best" only what works for each 'tog.

I doubt many use two systems, mainly as the controls are different enough to mean it slows you down when swithcing.
 
When I look at sports photographers, a good percentage of a lineup use Canon equipment and again I sit there thinking why is this?

How did I come to this observation? mmmm well just glance and count how many grey/off white lenses at a football match?

When you look at prices, canon seem to be generally cheaper, again why is this?

Its your equipment at the end of the day and again you chose it? why critisise others purchases? Is it a sense of jealousy?

I do agree that Canon handle noise better than Nikon, but Nikon are on form with the release of the D3 and D300? But if noise doesn't concern your photography then it shouldn't be anything to moan/dig about? Again both have there pros/cons...

icecavern : updated ;) and like you say everyone should just go out and enjoy the love of photography and not compare equipment as "status". As we all know the equipment helps you capture what you see but not what you compose!

One possible advantage for sports shooters in the past has been that the pro Canon 1D Mk II has had about twice the mp (8.5mp 8.5fps) than the fast Nikon at the time, D2-Hs (8 fps, 4.1mp)
 
Alot of the reason that sports shooters use canon gear is because a few (good few) years ago canon AF systems were faster than Nikon AF, which is obviously an important concern for them. Now it's not a difference, but most sports togs now own canon lenses etc, so they're not going to switch :)

Or so I've read anyway...

My view...

I hate Cannon and all of its users! :lol:

Only kiddin, your just as good as us Nikon users ;) :D

I'd own either, both have pros and cons. I just prefer the feel of a Nikon.

Canon seem to sponsor an awful lot of sports too (Formula One for starters) - would that have an effect on the number of Canon's at sporting events ??? :thinking:

As a relative new Canon Digital SLR owner - I constantly compare my Canon shots against the same level Nikon shots on here and Flickr etc...
the conclusion I have come to is....

it's certainly not the camera BUT the photographer who makes the photograph....
 
To rise above the flippance of my first post, I have owned both brands and in a number of different incarnations.

They both take pictures, for my use, of comparable quality.

I like Nikon best ONLY because I like the way they look!
 
well said..after all its just a name, and 'you' have to learn how to take good pics,cos camera's,regardless of what make they are, dont do nothin without you pushing buttons and moving dials in order to get that shot.

I don't think that's true at all. I worked at the Sydney Olympics and the one thing that struck me was the fact that the majority of togs were shooting Nikon. (This fact was one of the reasons why I first chose a Nikon when I changed from my Minolta x700). There might be a few reasons for Nikon's dominance in Sydney. In the days of film Nikon was the camera of choice for the press phtotgrapher which meant that papers and would use the same gear for sports togs. Also, when digital came around, Nikon stole a march on Canon with the D1 which was head and shoulders above Canon's D30 of the time.

I think the sea change came when Canon introduced the 1D and eversince Nikon had struggled to deliver a body which is enough to retain all but the most loyal of sports togs.

Better AF performance was why sports pros left Nikon in the 1990s. There's never been anything compelling enough since then to get them all to switch back. That's why you see all the white lenses at sports events. Remember, sporting is only part of the photo picture.

Us Olympus users never enter into the banter as we are usually out there actually using their cameras, rather than talking about them.

Yeah but what you left out was that you'd read Ken "make it up as I go along" Rockwell! :lol::lol: It was Nikon, Nikon, Nikon as far as I can remember in Sydney.

Interesting point about the Sydney Olympics is that it was the last Olympics to still have a major set up for film photographers. What happened was runners would collect the films from the togs on the sidelines and run them back to the media centre, there they were collected by volunteers from the Syndey Harley Owners Group who couriered them to the specially set-up processing unit on UPS sponsored Harleys.
