Ok not knowing all that much about networks and routers and things are there any simple things i can do with windows to speed up my home network.

ive got my laptop and PC plugged into my Sky BB router and im copying 10gigs of photos off the laptop onto the PC, this isnt wireless, im using wired connections which always seems a little faster with moving files around. its copying at 2megs per second which seems painfully slow.

Is there anything i can so to speed things up?

Yes, move to gigabit networking assuming both the PC & laptop support this (IIRC, the Sky router is only fast Ethernet which is ~6MBytes/sec max throughput). You will need a gigabit switch (or replace the whole Sky router with something compatible) if the Sky router isn't gigabit capable. I think neil_g is on Sky - he'll know the details....

Also.... are you sure it isn't wireless? I've 2 laptops here that insist on carrying on using the wireless connection when an Ethernet cable is plugged in. I have to disable the wireless card in device manager to get them to use the cable for networking.

Thanks peeps, i just assumd it always used a cable link for preference if it was plugged in, it does seem a little faster transfer rates when they are anyway.

So whats this gigabit thing? is that just a new router i can buy and use instead? Does it not have to be the sky box for it to work or is the telephone socket the important bit?

There are several different makes but I don't believe any support gigabit Ethernet. That's why I have the small 8 port netgear switch.

so if i get one of these...

http://www.maplin.co.uk/8-port-unmanaged-gigabit-switch-222456

and plug everything into that i should start to get faster transfer rates?
Yes - assuming the PCs all have gigabit ports on them, but I'd want an all singing and dancing switch for £70.

This: http://www.ebuyer.com/47407-netgear-prosafe-gs108-8-port-gigabit-metal-desktop-switch-gs108uk

is the same switch for £40 and you could go as low as: http://www.ebuyer.com/225791-tenda-5-port-gigabit-switch-g1005d

if you can make do with 4 ports + 1 uplink to your router (you have to connect the switch to the router so one port is used for that).

Get any extra ethernet patch cables from ebuyer too - they'll be about a 10th of the price than Maplins....

ive got the GS108, the only thing it cant do is link aggregation but i doubt the OP will need that
Don't think the GS is managed is it Neil? The GS108T is the smart version of the switch....

thanks a lot peeps. How do you tell if you have a gigabit connector on the pc's? I had a look in the device manager at the properties of the network card but nothing sprang out at me, would it have the word gigabit somewhere? Im guessing mine arent if thats the case and then im stuck anyway :)

What network card is it? If it isn't obvious (100Mbit Ethernet will say Fast Ethernet somewhere) you can google the name of the card.
