Why is my (Canon) flash not displaying zoom and maximum range?

I just got my new 430ex II flash unit today and have been reading through the manual and trying it out. It seems to work fine but in the manual it says when i press the shutter down half way the LCD screen should display zoom and maximum range. It doesn't... all I get is a "zoom --mm". I can set zoom manually but it should be displaying the automatic values too ? I use a Canon 450D if that makes any difference?

Urm... yes :bonk:. Does that make a difference? I jumped ahead to tilting/bouncing before reading that part of the manual .

Yes. It will only zoom pointing ahead.
