Hi Guys

At the moment I use a D60, the one thing I love about it is its light and I carry it everywhere,

The things I don't like about it are the full stop inrements of ISO, and crummy three point auto foucs and AF-s only has driven me to lovely manual foucsing lenses like Voigtlander and Zeiss, I also get tried of accessing the menus for all the metering, white balance options. I also want and metering modlue in the camera body so I can buy second hand ZF lenses, I don't mind £ framse per second but I do wish it would have a bigger buffer.

I have always wanted the D700 for the bright veiwfinder that will help make nailing manual foucs easier, the High ISO and finer control and the massive dynamic range, I also like working with narrow depth of feilds and that comes with full frame.

However these new camera seem to be offering some of these options. so should I still hang on until they replace the D700 and can hopfully get one with a couple hundered off or settle for a cheaper camera?

Your thoughts please! :D

Cheers Stuart

Get the D700, its everything you think it is plus 100% more!

I dont think you'll find many people saying dont buy it Im afraid!

I think you have made up your mind, just do it....
It will feel sooo good.

From a D60 to a D700?

Blimey!

I went from a D60 to a D90 and was blown away by the D90. I then went from a D90 to a D700 and was blown away by the D700. I'm now selling my D90 to get another D700.

If you're going straight from the D60 to a D700, have someone close at hand when you first use it, because you'll break down and cry, having never experienced anything so fantastic, so beautiful in all your life.

I love my D700 more than my wife.

This made me chuckle

Well that is a good point. As a Phd student a D700 is a MASSIVE investment, So will I be happy with it in three years time?

Crikey - I went thru the following - D40, D60, D80, D90, D300s & now own a D700 - All this in 2 years, so hopefully the D700 will finally do me (with the lenses below)

So if you want the D700 then get it - why think about what happens in 3 years time

If you like it & it will do what you want at its current stage then there is your answer...

If in doubt leave it out or better still hire it & see... I'm happy with the D700 & thats all that counts (althou I haven't really had the chance to give it a good damm shoot with).....

You;d better hope she doesnt read these forums without your knowledge, or you and Mrs D700 will be on the sofa for a while.

I had a D40 (thanks Uncle Ken) for a year, but the autofocus hardly hit the spot with wide apertures and chasing through all the menus drove me mad. Next affordable thing was an S5, which cropped up here.

A Japanese tourist handed me a D700 recently at the Belvedere in Vienna to take a photograph of him and his girlfriend. Neat. The viewfinder reminded me of my dad's F2 and the good old FM.

So my advice, buy two and send one to me ;). But given that you're research slave as well ... go out, take more pictures until you're in a proper job.

Cheers guys, I supose the problem and why I am writing this post is because of one basic fundmental flaw with the D700... I can't afford it! I just want you tell tell me that a smelly old D200 will be just as good! :D

But I also want to avoid the route that trigs took, Dare I ask how much that cost?

I have also heard of D700 owners start pandering for a D3, I don't think kit lust ever ends it just get hampered by the weight you are strong enough to carry!

Stuart

You want a D700 for the same reason I do (or a D3s for that matter), because you think and have convinced yourself that you will take better photos with it.

When the real reason is you want something new and shiny.

I think the S5 is the only other camera I would consider instead of the D700, But even then I think it would be a stepping stone.

Don't bother it's too big and cumbersome. Stick with the D60 it's almost as good.:help:

The S5 is a completely different beast to the D700. I expect I'll still have mine long after the D700 is obsolete. It's wonderful for portraits and ill suited to pretty much everything else.

Just buy it and eat baked beans for 6 months but don't forget that you will need to spend £1300 on a lens to do it justice (although £100 on a AF 50mm f1.8D will do too :))

I can't afford it!

Buy used.

A D200 won't give you enough of an advantage over your existing body to make it worth the upgrade based on the upgrade motivations you listed above.

ISO performance :shake:
Different DoF :shake:
AF - not greatly

Even a D300 wouldn't tick all the boxes.

Make the right choices and acquisitions and gear lust starts to turn from want to need.

Reasons not to buy it.

1. There's no guarantee you'll take better pictures
2. It's bigger & heavier
3. Loads more options to fiddle with and frak yourself up.
4. You can't afford it.
5. You can't afford it.

I've got a D700, and a D70s as a "special" body so would recommend keeping the D60 even if you do buy the D700.

If the 24-70's is £1300 it's gone up a chunk in the last 6 months, mine was £900!!

BTW, I still waste loads of pixels cos the viewfinder's not 100% on the D700, but I'd buy another in a shot.

As for a D3 If I were to step up, I'd be looking at the D3x, at which point I'd be inclined to spend that money on a Mamiya 645D ( 1/1600 sync ) because of what I shoot.

Good point about taking better pictures, So I confess there are things I listed that I would like if I was upgrading, Like in built camera metering, That will not help me take a better picture The things that I find are limiting me from taking better picture with my D60 are.

1) Missing foucing point (this happens alot) And most of the time it can look pin sharp through the veiwfinder (and yes I have calabrated the manual foucs)
2) I will describe it as ISO handling,
3) camera having a buffer of about 4 photos
4) Flicking through menus or finding the camera is locked up while writing to the card.

Stuart

Where do you get 50mm F1.4d for £100 from? I have the 1.8, which is great, love it to bits. But you know 1.4 would be nicer.

Yes Yes Yes, that was a typo :) it should be the AF 50mm f1.8D

To be honest there is not that much difference between the 1.8 and 1.4 I have had both for ages.

...on the point of buffer (D700), well I have sandisk extreme CF cards and found myself filling up the buffer and waiting for long card writes at a festival recently. Suprised me.

It is a brilliant camera, however quite often not always leaps and bounds ahead of the D300 (i have both) and does need to be fed bigger, heavier quality FX lenses. Depends on your photography to some extent whether it is a great leap in IQ but it is so much better to have a semi pro' body over the more amateur range because of access to switches/buttons over menus and for me, a much better feel.

Reasons not to get one would be if you can afford a new one, best to wait for the new model, however secondhand D700's are now a keen price (in comparison).

D700 was/is my first Nikon. Totally blown away. Not just IQ but also the ergonomics. I now have two, both gripped. I'm also penniless...do I care...!

I've been gearing up for full frame, the lenses that I have are all full frame and not to shabby

What people forget is that having full frame lenses doesn't mean you won't need/ want to replace them. The change in view you get when moving to full frame can make an existing kit feel awkward. Normal lenses become wide and tele lenses no longer zoom that far. Had this argument with a pro and ex film shooter on another forum - he replaced most of his lenses within a few months.

If you need to change lenses the cost of moving will soon spiral. Given the way we tend to collect kit this can be an argument for moving sooner rather than later if you will move at some point.

As others have said, you'll find the body and larger lenses heavy, especially coming from a D60 - I'd hate to see another 'bought too much kit and moving to MFTs' thread :D
