why i think im out of my depths in photography

Get down to the public library or find something on the net as soon as you can. If you want to learn, do it now........not at the back end of next year.
 
ok ill go down the public library day after boxing day and try to get my ban lifted. lol and pay my fines. im getting a mini tripod :D yey, im gonna buy a photography book too :D

Why would you even think of waiting till September???

If you want to be force fed it all from here then think again.. there seems to be a patern emurging here to do with attitude or something, i dont want to be more specific.. so im going to stop posting on this thread before i upset anyone.. In your profile it says you're 26!! :whistling: (A grown up!) You also say you're a student BUM.. :shrug: say no more..
 
im a student coz i need qualifications. i left school with none so i had to wait till i was classed as a mature student to get in at uni, and needed the bursery as i couldnt afford to go without government funding. coz i was sick of doing jobs no one else wanted to do for minimum wage. and in my younger day i was banned from my library for stealing. but that was like 7 years ago so they probably wont even remember me. i dont do that now.
 
and i failed my 2nd year at uni due to problems with the people in my accomodation, and no support from uni lecturers and i put in a complaint, and transfereing but cant start till september.and i didnt say not go to the library till september i said to the university library.
 
and as to be force fed i dont want that ive worked hard for everything ive got, i put myself thru nightschool to get a gcse in english and an 11 plus in maths. and the library costs a fiver to join. i am broke because for some reason i cant seem to get a job, even tho i apply and apply and apply. ive had to work a lot harder than MOST people to get where i am today, and still wud be at my university if i didnt have to put in so many complaints and had to transfer. i mean i now have 15 pounds. ive not seen that sort of money since september. so i am trying learn as much as possible without spending a penny.
 
not everyone is lucky enuf to be able to have a job or qualification, or money.
 
i never actually got them lol the alarms. but i was young and stupid. i dont do that now.... im sure this is karma lol. i started to believe in it. lol my bad luck now was from being bad wen i was younger lmao and i feel a lot happier now xmas is over :)
 
i do feel more like my ownself he more "happy xmas time is over" lol guess im a bah humbug, lol justdont like seeing people so happy lmao. ;) now all i need to do is get my camera back, rescue my relationship, apologise pay my fine and re-join the library, join the photography club and spend my 15 quid xmas money :Don that desktop tripod thingie :D lol oh and buy a laptop, somehow with a keyboard and touchpad that work mine dont lol im using a pc keyboard and mouse :)

I have been biting my tongue for the last few days hoping that you would wake up and smell the coffee.

Have you not guessed yet why your life is in such a turmoil?

You have done nothing but show a negative attitude on almost everything you have posted here for the last week or so. To be honest, if I was an employer I would not want to employ you at the moment either.

You need to get yourself a more possitive attitude in order to make things happen for you. Not easy, I know .... But you need to do it. !!!

Sorry if this feels unjust but it needed to be said.

Take this opportunity of the end of this bad year to take a different approach on life.

What have you got to lose?
 
as soon as xmas is over i promise i will :) just get this whole horrible holiday season over, new year new sig.

Walk to a mirror, find the problem, adjust your mindset and snap out of whining mode.

I'm also a true beginner Asher and know exactly how you feel. I've been trying to use my p&s on manual setting and getting a lot of black empty shots.
My shots are so bad don't think I'll be posting any more on here cause last few times I didn't even get a negative comment on them. I do love photography though and want to learn so will continue taking pics and perhaps buy a book or go on a course to help learning process and wait til I get my first DSLR. Keep taking pics Asher admitting your lack of knowledge on here was a step in the right direction and you can only improve from now on :)

All the advice you've been given is really great and as helped me. Thanks for being brave enough to admit what you didn't know. I've been posting pics and getting very little comment or help of late and am thinking of not bothering any more. I know my pics are s*****t but like you I want to learn and get better unlike you I still own and use a p&s waiting to get a DSLR.
Keep taking those pics Ashers you can only get better :)

First let me start by praising you for having the courage to try manual if you consider yourself a beginner.

Please excuse if I sound like I'm talking "down" to you but I have no idea what your current knowledge is.

The fact that you are getting black frames tells me that either your shutter speed is too fast or your aperture setting is too small - or possibly a combination of the two.

I hope someone like CT will see this in time and refer you to other threads where these basics are discussed, but, at your own peril I will try to explain as I understand it.

Let us talk basics and forget that we have different lenses and forget that flashguns exist.

In basic photography there is only 1 thing you want to control and that is the amount of light getting into the camera.

You can do this in three or so ways:

by increasing/decreasing the shutter speed e.g. 1/60 second or 1/30 second (one sixtieth or one thirtieth.)

by adjusting the inside diameter of the lens (aperture).

By adjusting the amount of light sensitivity in your film /sensor.

I will not even attempt to explain the numbers here but always try this as a rough starting point:

In daylight(bright sunlight) start with 100 ISO; f/11 aperture; shutter at 1/125.

If overcast use above settings but f/8 OR shutter at 1/60.

These are rough guides to get you started and will obviously change as you gain experience and start to go for special exposures.
