Ive noticed a few times now that when i open up a file browser it can take an age to open up and be responsive. I get a progress bar working its way along the top and it wont let me click on anything until the bar is full.

I have an external 3TB USB 3.0 drive, 2 internal SSD's and one internal regular HD on Windows 10 although this happened on Win 7 too.

Is there anything i can do to ensure this doesnt happen?

It can depend on the processor as well.
you should not do a defrag on the SSD memory unless you have something like System Mechanic which includes SSD cleanups as well. I bought that program and it is well worth it just for that alone. needs a bit of searching within the program but it is there.

I also bought Revo uninstaller which gets rid of remminants left by deleted history programs in the registery.I always delete using this

Yeah but what Browser, like going to the Doctors and saying my leg hurts but not telling him which one!!!
lol - I think he's talking about the File Explorer

And if so, I have noticed the same. Nothing running in the background sometimes and still it takes an age and this is off a relatively new disk (3-4 months old). Seems to have started with Windows 8 and still the same with Windows 10. I find it quickest just to close it then start again.

i think it depends largely on the speed on the drive and the contents of the folder. also what view you have enabled, plus sorting options.

for example, my work laptop (i7, SSD etc) is snappy as hell normally. however browsing to my onedrive camera sync folder (1000's of large JPG, thumbnails on and sorted date desc) takes about 30s to render.

Also, have you made any changes to or updated your Anti Virus - it might be doing some scanning and will therefore delay showing you the folder contents.

Check your power saving settings. It is possible that Windows is spinning down internal drives if they are not accessed for a certain time, and / or the external drive has its own power saving built in which does the same.

My external drive definitely shuts itself down if not used, when I load explorer and go to that drive letter one can hear it spin up again.

:agree: Just what I was going to suggest. I have my PC & server drives set to spin down and there's a very noticeable delay in which they can be heard spinning up.

do you have the search service disabled for indexing?

It seems to have gone in W10, but in W7 you could select and speed up opening depending on the content type - e.g. documents or pictures.
If it's mixed select 'general items'
