Why does a new router bring such troubles?

Decided to upgrade my network, new LAN cards, switches and a router to bring them all into the Gigabyte age!

Stuck in the Netgear router this afternoon and the wizard CD:eek:

Got onto the internet OK then used the supposedly one button WPS to connect my range extender to my new router!

A few hours later, discovered the one button Netgear tech ni que had renamed my SSID and put in a head-scratcher of a password, despite the wizard CD putting in my own versions:razz:

Much later discovered I could not get onto internet with any of my PC's because said router's internet icon had went red:gag:

Sorted that eventually, then found that most of my many AV/firewall systems were preventing any dialogue with any of my computers!

All in all, Mike is not a happy bunny!
 
Rule #1: never use a Wizard CD/auto config/one touch setting for anything network related. Always work at it from first principles.

Aye, but i'm getting old!

Anyway will leave in learning mode overnight and all will be well in the morning light;)

Indeed.

Also why update the router when you'll just have a gigabit switch hanging off it anyway? We don't even have gigabit between the firewall and routers at work :lol:

The old one was declining, I have modem router upstairs with all ports full, so my gigaswitch lives downstairs feeding computer and Humax.

Soon to feed that Talktalk TV thingy too:love:

Anyway, all is well with my network again and internet speed is an astounding 9.3 on a supposed 8meg line, which gave 7 on the old router!

Doesn't look as if there is any easy way to do that, Mark.

It's not showing up on the router light anyway and the repeater connection is now OK, so will probably leave well enough alone;)
 
Very impressed with that Filebrowser app for ipad.

£1.49 and a dawdle to see my USB drive connected to the router.

Had a wee think about this, are you saying I can make common 10/100 modem router into a gigabit one, simply my connecting a gigabit switch to one of the ports?
 
nope. im saying youll not really need gigabit to the router (as long as youre only plugging in the switch to the router).

think about how fast your internet connection is compared to the ethernet link.

Sorry, you lost me there, Neil.

My original network was 3 computers hardwired to a 10/100 modem router with a 10/100 switch to give more feeds downstairs to other devices.

Sending photos etc between PC's took a wee while, so I updated all the LAN cards, and switch to 10/100/1000.
I thought it was illogical to do this without updating the modem router to a gigabit one.
Are you saying I could have just stayed with the old modem router?

I certainly see folders transferring much quicker with this new setup but my internet connection doesn't seem too stable.
 
What Neil is saying is that you could have a gigabit switch, with everything wired through it for your home network. You then wire your old router into one of the ports of the switch and use it as a glorified modem. The switch & router sort everything out between them.

Ah, I think the penny has dropped, thanks for clarifying that Andy.

I will give that a wee go later with my old router.

This new one is either dropping out or giving me fast speeds or low ones:shrug:
 
Modems can be funny b**gers. It's an analogue signal so it has to sync with a bit of equipment at the other end.

You just connect one of the ports on your new switch to one of the (I assume it's a 4 port) 4 router ports on the modem/router. Everything works at Gbit, apart from when you're talking to the Internet when it'll be a 100Mbit connection....
 
Old router back in with setup as suggested by Neil and Andy, working fine so need another gigabit switch and return this fancy router, many thanks for both your help.
