Why do you post your photos?

Do you need the criticism?
Aren't you happy with what you produce?
Do you want smoke blowing up your arse?
Are you just taking part for the social element?
How much weight do you put into the opinions of fellow forum users?
Would you prefer criticism from 1000 hobbyists or 10 professionals with a large understanding of your field and proven skill?

Blah blah blah... :)

There is no positive or negative slant to this btw it's merely for discussion and all that (considering it's a friday and none of you will have anything better to do) :P
 
I post to get honest crit from all here good or bad this way I can improve my shots as 99% are just acceptable and 1% are great so far but I want to reverse this
 
I've posted a few in the various specialist boards to share with people I thought would be interested. They are only of interest because of the subject matter, I'm not a very technical photographer.
 
I think possibly more the social side of things. To start with it was to improve my pictures and the couple of years i have been here it has improved. but recenlty i have found the C&C less helpful, its nice to recieve positives comments but i find many of the negative comments are of little value, either it is something i can do nothing about or its about subjective viewpoints and i dont agree.

So why still post? i guess to share my view on life and art :D

for myself i have used this forum since i got my 1st p+s / brige camera a few years ago now. and from what i was showing then to today is a huge difference all through posting on here and getting advice and help..

everyones opinion is valued by me but if i am honest there are a few togs that i hope comment on my shots as there opinions DO mean more to me ...

and hopefully help others with compressions etc
 
I like the feedback, because sometimes there are things about my photos that I don't see or catch until someone else points it out. It's very helpful!

I post my shots on her and expect to get bad feed back but when I get good replies it gives me insperation to go out and try harder, I also like the social side of the forum especialy when there is a bit of a scrap over views :D Pro or none pro we are all doing the same thing but some are better than others, myself have got a lot to learn but it's great fun and thats why I am her :thumbs: Ps bring on the critics :razz: :lol:
 
I like C&C - unfortunately most people are affraid of upsetting people so settle for comments like "great shot" without any indicator to what could be done to make it better.

I'd prefer the panel of 10 pros who would rip my work to pieces to help me improve
 
i somewhat see what you're saying about the great shot thing but do all shots need to be criticised further than that?

if it is genuinely a great shot then perhaps it doesn't need to be eternally tweaked to perfrection? :)

How much weight do you put into the opinions of fellow forum users? Completely depends what they have said and who is doing the saying. I appreciate those who give honest crit and make an effort to post constructive comments. I have a lot of respect for certain individuals and the skill they show in their own photography or the effort they put into trying to help others - I would value those peoples opinion highly

I post my football stuff cos I know they're good and like to show them off. Anything else is usually to help me improve.
 
I post my pics for a number of reasons really.

1) There is something that is lacking in them
2) Trying out a new idea and value peoples input

I don't post because I think my pics are fab and I want the praise as I am yet to take a great shot. Some are OK, others not so. I am genuinely interested in what people think, so I would like more than a one liner.

To this end, I have really tried to give better crit to others in the hope that others will follow suit. I'm sure they don't, but at least I feel I am doing my bit.

Some peoples opinions I value more than others, as I consider them to be at a level in their particular photographic field that is very high. If my pics getted pulled apart, so be it. Then I know what to do better next time.

I also have found I am 'getting to know' some of the people on here and I quite enjoy it socially.
 
I Post mainly to share my interests with like minded people, I do like the feedback and constructive critisism but I have never taken critisism to heart because technical aspects aside, what one person minght love another won't care for.
I must say the standards on this forum are pretty damned good, I remember when I got my first dslr about 4 yrs ago I used to look on the forums and pick all the tips up from the comments before I dare post anything.

But if we didn't have the goal of perfection...wouldn't we have nothing, well nothing of true use or value. (artistic value not money)

I post to learn, the other stuffs a useful and often very unplifting side effect.

I do think its important to inspire and admire others shots as honestly as possible, if only to help clarify my own inadequacies as well as my strengths.
 
I haven't posted any yet... but I'm here for the social side of things... it's wonderful to talk to people who actually like photography, rather than just tolerating me and my ever-present camera, lol! And also to learn, I'm still very much a beginner really, and it's fab to see other people's work and comments and learn from it all :D
 
I post in order to learn from comments that may be offered.

In the year that I have been on here I think I have learned a lot. Some from the comments, but I suppose mostly from other threads and comments on them.

I don't post for praise BUT it's nice if any is given!

And, yes, you do (kind of) get to know other TP members as you go along.

see i don't really like perfect, perfect to me is too pure and regimented which is one of my main reasons for avoiding criticism because people aren't particularly flexible with their criticism and generally unforgiving.

i know if someone asks me what can be improved i'll look for something to improve in a shot however if they're happy with a shot then it's just there for appreciation or un-appreciation (which is why the fluffy kittens section is quite good)

so many shots i see these days are textbook shots that don't capture a lot of character or feel, granted they're good shots but i sometimes ponder whether this want for perfection or perfect technique gets in the way of people looking at what they're photographing or even why they're photographing it.

I post images because:
I produce the best I can but feel that there are much better photographers out there that can give me *Free* and *true* advice on the specific shot I have taken.
No Book can do this nor DVD.
I feel the level of photographs some people produce are supreame and TBH, I want to join them. I have years ahead of me where I can improve on my shots and learn about the shot rather then just pressing a button.

Today I learnt a simple lesson of not being afriad to set up a shot to make it look none-setup, And not to be afraid to get close to your subjects.
And guess who/what taught me this?
A book? - No
A DVD? - No
A Human that signs on to TalkPhotography and gave up some of their valuable time to take an Ametuer out with them and understand why they do what they do - Yes!
Money cannot buy real life experinces that can be offered from just some simple advice from the freindly people of TP.

(All IMO of course ;))
 
I post if I need processing help or a bird ID, otherwise I may put something in the FKCC area but not anywhere for c&c.
Its NOT a case of me not wanting to improve - I do very much want to, but I prefer to go through things with someone I know who will sit down and go through things constructively and help me rather than put them on the forum.
I spent a couple of hours this afternoon doing just that and have a much better idea of how to set up that sort of shot and how to process them, plus I have come away happier and feeling that I am heading in the right direction.

I post for a variety of reasons, sometimes just to share, sometimes in the hope of learning from the experience and views of others.

One thing I do know is that I'm better photographer today than I was when I joined TP:thumbs:

I post some(if I think they're good) just to share most go on flickr, all C&C is welcome as I consider myself a newbie I'm always looking to improve. I prefer flickr for just looking at photos as its easier to search for a chosen subject. I've only been on TP since January but I think it's a great community with a wealth of varied opinions and experience.
 
I post everything I'm happy with to Flickr, as a record for myself rather than anything else. I do like to show off shots I'm proud of though, on here and on Flickr, as I like to hear other people's opinions on them, good or bad. I post to learn as well, I've learnt a lot and my photography has improved massively since I joined TP in Septemer 08.
 
It's nice to get an impartial, and a variety of opinions. When friends and family look at my shots I usually take what they say with a pinch of salt as I feel they are a little careful about upsetting me. Whereas on here you lot don't care. :-D

I'd probably take the 1000 normal people over the 10 pros. What makes a good photo to a pro doesn't make a good photo to a punter, and it's the punters that we sell to.
 
I post in the hope that people enjoy what I show and take something from it and so indirectly improve their photography. I get a lot of inspiration and ideas from others on here and other places I visit in the digital world. I get more out of this forum participating I'm sure then if I didn't post at all.
 
It would boring to shot for myself only, and it is great to get feedback.

Indoors, the only pictures I take that get a reaction when displayed or printed are the "snaps" - The ones of the kids, the dogs, etc. etc.
Any attempts at carefully composed, or planned photo's tend to be met with a "it's nice but what did you take one of that for?" kind of response.

At work, because I'm a miserable git, everyone like everything because their too afraid of giving me the hump.

I tend to post here the ones I'm happy with, but feel could be improved, in the hope that someone (or several someones) will offer honest opinions, and suggestions for improvement, things that could be done differently and so on.

Unfortunately, most of the ones I do post usually only elicit one response before they drop off of the radar.
 
I post a few pics on here - usually because I like them and just want others to see them - hopefully for their enjoyment. I'm not looking for C&C. I do this for a living so what people think here doesn't really matter as long as the people commisioning the work are happy. Many of my shots are seen in print by thousands but maybe some people can learn from seeing some of them? I try to give helpful C&C when people are asking for it - but many people here don't like the truth and just want the 'great shot' comment. I hope that doesn't come across in any way as arrogant because it isn't meant to. If people really want to see my work they can follow the links in my sig to see more.
 
I usually post pics with the sole purpose of hoping to receive advice or critique to help me improve. Other times it's just for the fun of sharing pics with others.
