Why do they do that?

Being new, I have had a look at a number of photographs that members have posted. What I don't understand is this fascination with putting a name, web site or other gratuitous bit of text on the photograph. I certainly wouldn't buy a print that had this sort of thing on it - so why do they do that?

Just a copyright thing really, i guess when and if they did sell them they would then remove this writing etc.

it's just to stop people on the web using the images without permission. If they were selling an image it definitely wouldn't have the water mark.

Hi rh1944,
I have seen a few where people have taken it to far, and as such, made the image look bad.

I personaly add "Photography by Gareth Welch" to all of my images as a step to preventing theft.
If I sell a print it will never have that on it but then the aim of putting my photos on TP is not to sell them, just to get feedback.

Precisely as above, if you want to protect yourself I'd get into a habit of doing it. I agree with you but it's better to be safer than sorry.

Read the below thread concerning a member who had an image stolen:

There are plenty of cases like this, some really bad some not so bad.

Anyway, there's some food for thought for you. Welcome to the forum!

Many thanks for the explanations - it makes sense if you are protecting yourself from theft. At the moment, I might take it as a compliment if someone stole one of my photographs.

Glad to be on a forum where there is helpful advice. I've already bought a nifty fifty for my Canon EOS 400D - now trying to find out how to use it. I usually start with flowers as they tend not to move, have great texture and fabulous coulors.

No worries at all! There are some really helpful and very wise folk on here, far wiser than myself I will add.

Not a bad choice of starting equipment there imo, flowers would be good to practice on too, especially if you fancy getting into macro. Make sure you post the results and don't be shy!
All the best

pleasure :)

have lots of fun and dont forget to post your piccies to share your progress. :)
I agree, flowers are great to photography, but not on a windy day when they are outside

 Good thinking! That was the first mistake I made!

It doesn't always work though. Plenty of times watermarks have just been cropped off.

Personally I watermarked mine with a web address so that if they found their way around the web, i.e. by being posted on forums, etc, then viewers could see where it came from.

I have posted my first attempts with the nifty fifty in the General Photography section as a new thread. It seemed inappropriate to post photographs in this thread.

After all that I still haven't got round to watermarking mine although all my details are now embedded in the metadata, until I suss out an easy way to do mine I post a couple of teasers and then chuck the rest on my site which adds a watermark automatically.

I was kind of flattered but why the hell should he use my image to market his business without any credit to myself or financial reward !
