Why do staff always open new phones

Yes
Me and the missus have bought loads of new phones over the years. Each time we have done so, the sales person always has the pleasure of opening and playing with it first! The missus bought a lovely new phone yesterday, and the salesperson opened the box and started to set it up. As he was doing so, I thought what a cheek. It would be nice, if they asked first! Or do they actually need to set it up themselves?

How about if it was a present for someone?

Besides, it takes some of the fun out of getting it home and unboxing it yourself first :cautious:

If you don't want them to open it then tell them not to
Yes I suppose we should have done. But he was a little too quick, as he said he will see if he has any in stock. When he came back, he already had started to open it. Just a bit cheeky really. Imagine buying a new camera, and the salesperson opened it, put memory card in and start to take photos.

I would have told him to take it back and bring out a sealed unit

They sometimes use that trick to pass on returned/refused items

I hate that. I have a small unboxing channel on youtube, and I was all set to record an unboxing of my samsung galaxy s6 which I was getting as an upgrade. And as with you, the salesperson had already begun opening the box as he was coming back from the storeroom. Didn't have a chance to tell him not to do it.

That's exactly what I mean, I often wondered that. Not that I am going to do a youtube unboxing, but others such as yourself will want to.

Besides, it would be nice to have the pleasure of being the first to open your new purchase.

I did half think that, but my missus just said it was my suspicious mind. But now I come to think of it, all the accessory packaging had been opened. But not sure if he did that while we were sat there, could not recall him going it  . Oh well, next time we will insist on a brand new unopened box ..

Last time I bought a phone from the Apple store the guy brought it out and asked me if I wanted to unbox it myself before he helped me set it up. So maybe it's just the phone shops that open them for you..

I think they should Ask, it is cheeky just opening goods you have just bought. I'm sure I could set the phone up myself, after all that's part of the pleasure.

It's when the salesperson perform the cardinal sin of peeling the protective film off the screen before you have the honour of doing that THEN you want to hurt that salesperson badly.

I never accept anything that has been opened or if the seal has been broken

A certain warehouse that doesn't sell cars once tried to sell me a used tablet, they bought the package out without the outer cellophane & seals intact, when I questioned this the scroat behind the till insisted that's how they came and that the item was brand new, I knew this was not the case so I just opened the box up and there was the tablet covered in smears, fingerprints & a scratch - I left the shop after rather loudly letting said scroat know that they should not lie to customers and try and rip them off

Strange as it seems I always tend to ask these days for staff to open new items on the counter. They have to be sealed beforehand though.

I do this to confirm all is well with the contents before I leave the shop. Sometimes I just don't trust the packaging and the description of the goods on the outer sleeve. The manual inside can be queried as well to confirm the full specifications and optional extras (not included)

I was looking at a new phone contract recently, and the manageress in the store took great delight in opening new sealed phones for me to "play with"
I only went in there for a sim only deal, but I guess she thought that it was worth a "punt"

So someone will be getting pre-mauled phones with their 30 odd quid a month contract ;)

Just thinking, there was no protective film on the new phone my missus bought. Cheeky git must have removed it. Maybe he did it to set phone up, just did not see him do it.

Although that's not as bad as somebody taking it home, playing with it for a week or two. [emoji21]

How do you know it hasn't been?

As ours are on contract, they come pre packed & cellophaned by courier to the door.:)

Then you have the pain of doing the transfer from the old phone...my other half is a wiz at that part.....she is welcome to it.

Certain shop that uses big black sticky security tape on their boxed items, mainly cameras. Does my head in , can't get tape off and end up ruining box. Only an issue if wanting to sell on in future. People like goods , especially cameras in a nice undamaged box. Me included [emoji57]

Yeah we have become obsessed with packaging. My loft is full of empty boxes.....Some are more valuable than the product they previously contained, if you keep them long enough...

Some people are never happy :p
Although the last item that was covered in black security was a camera box. In the end it did not really matter for two reasons. Reason one, the box was a black fujifilm box, so could not notice the black tape too much. Reason two, well let's just the camera won't be getting sold [emoji20]

Maybe phone sales people are really being nice and helpful. My looks are probably deceiving , but this doddering old fart really can set a phone up from scratch [emoji6]

I would have thought that in 2015 setting up the phone is no more work that switching it on type in your iCloud/Google/outlook details and off you go. So simple. Very easy solution to the staff opening, don't buy it in a store, buy it online and get the huge amount of quidco cash back as well ;)

To be honest, I find it very annoying when staff take it upon themselves to set phone up. I would never let staff set up my computer, as that's very personal. The more I think about it, the more it now infuriates me. Just might do it online next time [emoji6]

Exactly, and why pay so much more...Take Vodafone...Online upto £150 cashback (on a plan of £44 or more), in-store 3% cashback. So if £150 equates 3% then that would be a £5,000 phone deal instore to get the same deal....

EE £93 cash back, instore nothing, nada....

O2 £145 cash back, in store just 3%

Carphone warehouse £70, in store nothing.

And so on, they give money away to get your business....They don't when you walk in and try and palm off open boxes....Not good at all...But I guess it works as all highstreets now seem to be made up of 99p store, mobile phone stores, coffee shops, and pawn shops....Maybe that says something about the state of the uk and its priorities...

True o_O

What? there goes my shopping entertainment,
walking into a 99p store and asking the assistant
"how much is this"?

I was in a pound shop a while ago, a person barged to the front of the queue and said to the person on till, how much is this. The girl shouted to an assistant and said can you get me a price check. The assistant walked slowly, to the isle then came back. She said it's a pound, then the cashier said I had a feeling it might have been. The assistant the cashier, and the rest of the queue looked at the person who had asked the question, with disgust ;)

LOL Good point well made. Unfortunately it isn't that straight forward. Most places don't know customer service anymore, lack knowledgeable staff, and dare to sell open boxes for full price. At least online you'll get your phone sealed like a virgin, you will be the first one to use it after that Chinese bloke who packaged it up...

Bit odd that they look at the person asking the question in disgust. What about the cashier having to ask an assistant, and the assistant being dumb enough to actually walk and look...As far as I can tell Lady @Cobra was the only smart person in the store...

They're not taking it upon themselves. You're letting them.

You've already said you don't recall the assistant removing the outer packaging, and you don't recall them removing the film from the screen.....were you actually in the store? ;) :-)
