why do people have 50mm lens when you can have one with range?

dave is making a point, so far my most used lens is the 50mm 1.4. purely as it was considerably better than the 17-85 i had which covered the same focal range, now i bought a 24-70 f2.8 at teh weekend, and think that will be more the weapon of choice for flexibility over everything else. at parties i would rather not use flash, so the fifty will make its appearance then if i cant get the shots at f2.8, but i wont be selling the 50mm because of it.

My most used f-stop is 1.4. :) f/1.4 and 6400 ISO gets you shots that genuinely couldn't have been taken a few years ago.

I used to think that people were talking rubbish about primes making you a better photographer. Then I noticed that I seemed to get more shots that I liked if I wend out with a nifty fifty than with 3 zooms covering 10-300mm. :thinking: So I went through the photostreams of some of my favourite flickrites and noticed that they all began using primes fairly early and that there was an abrupt and noticeable change in the quality of their photography when they did. Not definitive but certainly interesting.
 
I once sold every lens I had and just used a 50mm Nikon on my FA for a year.
It makes you a better photography, I could shoot a full wedding on my 50mm.
I do about 90 percent of any wedding with it, but zooms have there place as well.

Could somebody please please please point me at a book/website that explains that. I don't want to know about difference in optical quality, just how it can make/teach me how to take 'better' photographs.
 
I don't know about a book or site but the principle is simple enough. It's about making the process of creating images more challenging. That in turn then stretches you further and you learn more/become more creative as a result.

Personally, I agree.
 
Don't take the words better photographer as gospal.
I think it just taught me a lot more about composition and slowed things down so I had to think more about my subject and exposure.

Why do you need to do that, DD has decreed that zooms do away with all that nonsense..........;)
