Why do folk on here call each other 'mate'?

Worked with a guy one many years ago. We got teamed up to put some roof trusses on and he was one side of the scaffold I was the other, after about 3 or so trusses being in place we where nose to nose on the scaffold, I had to walk away as one of us was not going to be on the scaffold very long, the conversation went like this.

Me. that's it mate, mine in place stitch it (nail it into place)
Him, mines stitched and I'm not your mate.
Me. (thinking he was joking) on the next truss OK mate that it mines in place
Him. Told you I aint your mate
Me.(being a young git started to wind him up) OK that's it stitch it mines in place
Him> (dropping the truss so it fell over proceed to make his way round the house to my side of the scaffolding) I have told you I aint your mate now what you gonna do about it.
Me. (he looked a bit outraged) Well keep walking and you will find out

Well you can guess the rest!!!!
For the record we both walked down the ladder off the scaffold but no more trusses got put up that day by me and him!!
Worked on that job 9 months and made a point of calling him mate everyday, along with every one else once I told them all he hated it so much ha ha ha!!!!!

Oh life on a building site
