Why do folk on here call each other 'mate'?

I think its a northern thing... I know someone from up manc way who moved to london and got a right earful for calling someone mate. :'(

I normally find that when a "conversation" includes the word "pal" it is better to walk away swiftly before the fight starts!

That's so true.

I always use the word pal not very often mate.

Must be an English thing, I suppose 'fit like mate' doesn't quite sound the same
I ony use 'mate' with one chap (who uses it in every sentence) and I feel I have to respond in a similar manner.

'Fit like min'? or 'aye aye mannie' works for me.:D

Don't suppose either would work much south of Brechin though.;)

I call girls that are my freinds 'mate' so yeah i think its not a gender specific thing

No no no no no!

blokes are "mate"

Girls are "pet" or "luv"

:):):)

Weird when you think about it though. Throughout the animal kingdom a mate is a sexual partner who you mate with, not you, but you get what I mean.

Oh and girls are Treacle, best pronounced EE character Pete Beal Style. ;) twreacle.

S'alright Sarah, I have my very own special ban hammer for Yves Geza.... no reflections :naughty:

you leave my mate be ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mate :)

The other nugget of terminology often used on here is 'The Wife' rather than 'My Wife'.

"mate" and "the wife" are not specific to TP

they are just common to the uk in general, it's not a photographer or tp thing

For the first 4 yrs of my life i thought my first name was dumb ass. Well thats what me dad called me :D

I'll use mate for people who I'm reasonably familiar with, fella for those I'm not that familiar with.

Being called buddy by someone I don't really know winds me up a little as in my book buddy implies a pretty close friendship.

Saying that, mate/pal/buddy/fella are all pretty polite compared to what I usually get called

I know a few girls that call their male friends client :|

no, we tend to use people's names :)

Really? Where are you then? I lived in Glasgow (well, lenzie, Kirkintilloch) and in Livingston. I could probably count on two hands people using my name.

I was either- pal, big man or wee man.

beside Inverness, a touch more civilised :p

Seriously, we'll either use someone's name or just use "hello" etc.

Mate, pal, cove, mucker, etc etc etc don't really get used much up here. There are one or two who do but they're in the minority.

The use of "pal" is usually the precursor to a Glasgow Kiss

yep - in my experience its short for " yea looking for truble ya lanky english gob*****"

fortunately the diet of deep fried mars bar and haggis hadnt prepared them to to catch a lanky english gob***** who wisely ran away
