Yes
I've noticed this quite a lot on here and I'm sure some of them have never even met each other!

Seems to be just the guys!

a lot of folk have met each other - but that aside if you talk to someone a lot then you get to feel like you know them and its a freindly term of address.

I call everyone mate, the wife takes the mick out of me for it, but its just me, I see a guy from work its hi mate, I see a guy in the car park at a weekend when out on the bike I will say hi mate hows things, might never have even met him before.
To me its just a saying nothing more, strange I know but it just seems friendly.

Only had one guy take offense to it in all the my years but he turned out to be strange any ways.

I talk to people online how I would talk to them face-to-face in a social environment.

I never call anyone mate.

Its alright pal :D

Do people call girls mate or is it just a boy thing?

I have been addressed as such on here and have to admit find it odd but my username doesn't make gender obvious.

I call girls that are my freinds 'mate' so yeah i think its not a gender specific thing

its obvious you're a girlie ,,,,annddddd just let me tune in a bit more ,,,yes ,, yes you have a scottish accent as well :)

Must be an English thing, I suppose 'fit like mate' doesn't quite sound the same

I've met well over a hundred TPers  in fact I suspect it's closer to 200 now from all over the country, I've actually got a fair number of them as friends on facebook, plus there are those that I've not currently met but have exchanged a load of PM's with

So if I call someone mate it's often because I've met them or built up a friendship with them over time

who says folk?

Somtimes i worry about you but sometimes i worry ALOT :|

Mate, pal, or buddy I use in speech (the latter two only to friends). In writing I only use mate to address actual friends but I may say thanks mate to someone at a checkout etc.

Alright me old china

alright darlin'

( I know some women find the term darlin' patronising - but you don't want to worry your pretty little head about things like that  :exit: )

 Alright Butt

(No I'm not insulting you, that really is the Welsh equivalent
and no I don't actually ever really say it either)

You mean it's not "O What's Occurring" or BoyO

no worries mate....

Actually people at work call me "abo" as when I help them out , usually with excel and stuff, and they thank me, my reply is "no worries" ...

Just remember which one of us has hold of the big, shiny ban hammer, butt

Nah, we just put that on for the English tourists.

Actually, for some strange reason I have never called anyone "mate" in real life and on the Internet, even to my old friends. Not sure why not, though. It's just like how I never type "LOL" in any of my messages.
Maybe I'm just different in my thinking or it's a habit I never got into. :)

Was about to say something but decided :schtum: is more appropriate as don't want to get a slap  :hug2:

Probably a bit too heavy for you though, dear :naughty:

I was about to reply to that . . . but I just spotted my reflection in the shiny ban hammer and realised that my eyelashes need curling and my lippy needs touching up . . .

Aye it's a worry, right enough!

After 15 years of calling my neighbour John and finding out his name is Clive, everyone is now Mate or Bud.
