Yes
cleaning your sensor might be possible but when the "cheap" battery fails mid process the shutter doesnt like it!

Ouch!

£300+ for a new Nikon Shutter!

Still well done to the repair team as they had the camera back to me in under a week!

Ouch! Was the battery fully charged?

It was and the shutter lock up worked but in the end it failed.

My wife tells me my face was a picture!

Something like you'd get if you stole an ice cream from a small child!

I can see the funny side now but at the time...................

Out of interest, what brand is the battery that failed? Is it an e-bay super cheapie or was it from a reputable source?

Eek I must remember to use the mains adapter when cleaning mine

it probably closed onto the swab.

Sorry to hear of the broken shutter. Just how does the shutter mechanism break in this situation though?

When the battery volts reduce the shutter closes automatically. If you have the cleaning swab inside the shutter, which you have to to swab the sensor, the shutter closes at high speed and hits the cleaning tool, this usually breaks the shutter leaf/mechanism.

I guess the only guaranteed way is with a mains adapter which is plugged into an UPS. Personally I only use Canon original batteries and fully re-charge them before sensor cleaning.

Or the adapter plug my accidentally lose the contact somewhere. Considering how well the remote cable plugs in, I am not trying it out.

do all nikons come with a DC plug in as standard the 3 canons i have had dont. Its an optional extra to buy the adapter.
mind you i have never had a problem with any of my batteries.

My 50D wont allow me to lock the shutter if it considers there's not enough charge, or a problem with the battery.

The battery wasnt an original however ti was fully charged and seemed ok.

Having spoken to Nikon and to Fixation who carried out the repair this is very common though I suspect most who mess up as I did probably hide in a dark place.

I'm over it now and it'll not happen again, the crunch was enough to scare me.

It could have been much worse as they tell me often the broken shutter damages the sensor!
