I'm mesmerised by this... a 2 minute video of Meskel Square in Addis Abeba. The busiest junction in the country, perhaps in Africa, who knows, but there are no traffic lights, no traffic islands, hardly any road markings and yet, miraculously, no crashes!
Judge for yourself...

Insh'allah?

Must be Nod :) Suppose traffic's going quite slowly but the pedestrians are pretty bold :)

It would be interesting to see it played in real time.

It used to be much like that by Marble Arch/ Hyde park corner london, in the 40's and 50's There were some lights, but they just let you into the general melee in the middle. As it was a multi way junction of roads, Strangers got stuck at a standstill in the middle, as they lost the will to go on to certain death.
The strange thing was, londoners had no trouble at all.

Yet if that was in the UK we would need speed cameras, yellow boxes and traffic light cameras to fine people.

Because UNLIKE us and others like us they still co-operate with one another for the mutual need of NOT crashing.....

There was an official road sign in Bury a few years ago that said "Weave Now" it was total chaos for the next 100 yds.

Blimey - you must be older than me. That was a lot of years ago. IIRC the chaos didn't really improve when they took it down.

A lot of years ago I used to know a farmer who lived a few miles from Bodmin. He used to drive his land rover around the country lanes at breakneck speed and with total (misplaced) confidence that there would never be another car around the bend...

Anyway, his wife told me about the one time they had visited London, he had to drive around Marble Arch, didn't know where to start and ended up abandoning it literally in the middle of the road:)
It's all about personal experience, local knowledge and personal skills.

I don't know when they stopped doing it but the RAC used to have a driver service. A Driver would meet you on the outskirts of london and Drive your car through for you.

I could drive all the way from The london College of printing and graphic arts in Clerkenwell all the way to to my digs in Hampstead with out passing through a traffic light. That would be impossible now. I knew most of the north west areas from the Thames outward as far as st Albans and watford. And parts of the south east from any of the bridges though to Kent.

Last time I drove round the Arc de Triomphe, about 8 years ago, it was exactly like that.

These vids always look impressive when speeded up like that. Saw something recently on a busy british road and it was very similar, tried googling it but couldnt find it.

Addis Abbaba is for wimps. For extreme city traffic you need to try Tehran. Does anyone remember the video game - "Frogger"?

I quite like the second one, particularly the attitude of the pedestrians as they cross the roads. The two solidiers walking towards the taxi (Paykan - Hillman Hunter) forcing it to move out of the way.

Yes it makes a big difference seen in real time, and there will be lots of incidents every day.

That's not nearly as much fun at normal speed :( but the soundtrack's better on the mine :) Think I'll speed up your's Neil and add some bangin' sound.:naughty:

I'm afraid I am old enough to remember "Frogger" Andy. I'm gonna speed yours up as well :naughty:
