Why are people buying electric cars?

Sorry, I've heard it all before countless times. As I asked have you done any continuation driving training?

Driving 50-60K a year does not make anyone a better driver to the standard where they have a reasonable chance of a longer life. If you start out with bad habits then chances are a driver never looses them, only compounds them. treating them as normal behaviour without further training or guidance.

It's a good start. Like with most things, from baking, to running to photography and including driving, the more you do things the better you get. Someone with greater experience (and yes there are other factors) is often better than a newbie.

Conversely, I only passed my CBT this year. Knocked up 1300 miles on a 125 since June, and have improved a lot (how I passed the cat who knows). First ride out at home I went a mile from the house, and almost popped my pants. Now am a lot more comfortable and confident, no issues on a 3/4 lane dual carriageway (aside from lack of speed). But there will be bikers with more miles on the clock who would put me to shame!

I was not talking about accelerating to overtake there is nothing wrong with that, it is using the vehicles acceleration capabilities to nip into a slot on a roundabout, forcing their way in and driving otherwise inconsiderately. It is a form of bullying and we don't like bullies - do we? Speed is not safe, but having proper control of a vehicle at speed is.

Unfortunately once people pass their tests they never ever do any further training and their standard is usually appalling and never improves. Have you? I have!

Some drive far too fast which is incompatible with their capabilities, especially when it is wet or icy. No signalling at junctions or roundabouts, speed limits - what are they? Drink/drug driving - why not? (Sarcasm intended) I have seen too many fatalities and don't wish to be intimately involved with one thank you.
quick question

have you driven an EV for any length of time ?

I wonder how many people do this to keep the in car entertainment on?

My current (7YO) car keeps the ICE on as long as the key is in the ignition, even with the other functions of the car turned off, and I'm reasonably sure my previous Mini Countryman ('11' reg) did the same. There's probably no need to keep the engine running, although some might not realise that.

Yes, it's pretty much always worked on what was the "acc" position hasn't it?

But, I've not owned anything keyless so not sure about those. I would imagine stuff would be able to be switched on once the key is in range without actually starting though.

Yes, basically the same as you mention

I have seen plenty of people sat in cars and vans with an idling engine. Sadly it's not unusual
Guilty of it myself before I saw the electric light (hallelujah praise the electron). In a past life I drove armoured vans that had so much electronics to run you couldn't switch off the engine or the 12v battery would drain and you'd never get it started again. Technology moves on and doesn't, we have the same problem now in some EVs, if you turn off the main battery without turning off the car the 12v drains very quickly.

I was a little confused for a second, with ICE being the TLA for both Internal Combustion Engine and In Car Entertainment!

In mine, I turn the engine off but the "ignition" on to listen to the last bit of a song (but rarely) (Diesel). In Mrs Nod's, I keep the whole system running in P rather than running the 12V battery down (having drained a dying 12V battery requiring the RAC to get the thing up and running again) (BEV). Tend to spend more time waiting in Mrs Nod's than in mine.

I think that judging quality of driving as a driver (only) is fraught with risk.

In order to better see how you should drive try time as a two wheeled road user, or a 2 legged one. Then you get to see the actual effects of someone driving to their conditions.

Longer answer.

No and I have no desire to, there are too many disadvantages. Driving an EV or a ICE one, have the same basic principals which a lot of owners/drivers have forgotten. Once they are through the test. the world is their oyster. Then, and only very rarely do they give actual safe driving skills a 2nd thought. They can now drive legally and only think about they may have done something wrong after they have had a morning audience with a magistrate.

I do, I have a motorbike, road bike, hybrid bike and run. I stay off the road if possible (run, hybrid bike) or if on road (road/motorbike) I am fully aware of others, that i am more vulnerable and expect the car at the junction to pull out so constantly thinking about corrective action.

and thus, you understand better what being in a car means to other road users.

When I found that my Evoque only kept the radio on for a few minutes I found that this was quite common. I suppose it varies with the make and model.

There is quite possibly a menu setting that allows you to adjust this feature.

Mine plays it until I get out of the car. Then turns it back on when I get in. Just like the AC.

Mine is a 2015 and with the engine off but the electrics on the ice only works for a few minutes and then there's an accompanying message but I can't remember the exact wording, words to the effect of saving the battery. I did ask on a car forum I used to visit and the answer was that that's what they do... and not just Evoque's. If yours doesn't do this it's either make / model / year dependant or something that can be turned off with one of those diagnostic programming devices but there's certainly nothing in the menu that I can see.

Next time I'm at the dealership or talking to anyone who might know I'll ask again.

i can't work out if your saying you don't drive a car or you do and everybody forgets about safety once they pass their test

this is what i think you said
you have no desire to drive a car EV or otherwise because of the driving skills of drivers who have passed their test and only realise the error of there ways when they are in front of a magistrate
thats what it looks like to me anyway
I See You Ride a Bike , I rode a bike for years but gave them up some time ago
nipping in and out of traffic using the bikes acceleration advantage was what you do on a bike but now cars have caught up especially EV's why is it so wrong to do the same as bikers have done for decades if it's safe to do so ?
i asked the question because i think you need to experience they way EV's drive to have an educated opinion about them

i have both
a Jaguar XF and a Tesla my wife has a Toyota BZ4X EV
the Jaguar did less than a 1,000 miles between it's last years MOT's the Toyota did 15,000 miles in the same time frame
The jaguar is for sale

i see EV's the same as i see Bikes they can be quick but you don't have to drive / ride like an idiot just because you can

i had a lot of fun on bikes in my youth

I do drive (sorry for your miss understanding) I have undertaken advance training on both cars and motorcycles to a high level in my working life. I have nothing actually against electric vehicles apart from the cost of a new one. I have a lot more to do with my money than spending 20+ grand on a car. In addition is the way they are driven by some, bordering on the dangerous making use of the acceleration in the wrong place. Perhaps more drivers should invest in advance driver training!

This is my last word on the subject because I am starting to get bored with it so can we get back to photography please.

Sure, all you have to do is avoid this thread, about EVs, in the General chat forum. Nobody is forcing you to read and respond to it.

I must say, in general, I've not noticed people driving like idiots in EV's. That's not to say they don't mind you. But it's not something I've taken note of. Mind you, there was an idiot Tesla driver when we were on the Snowdonia mountain roads overtaking over chevrons etc in the Welsh rain.....

Agree idiots aren’t specific to EVs we get them in all sorts of vehicles , my pet hate is tailgating see it all the time on the motorway what do they think will happen when the vehicle in front has to brake suddenly

Also my pet hate. Drives me bonkers, usually somebody in a car that probably can't stop as quickly as me as well. Until they write there own and somebody else's vehicle, they won't learn....

Out of interest, have you posted any pictures to the forum John? I don't remember seeing anything.

My take on tailgaters is that they aren't paying attention, as they are using me as their reference. Therefore get rid, when possible.

True in my experience at least they are being aggressive at least when I’m going through a village for example and I am sticking to the speed limit and they are trying to bully me into going faster
The ones on the motorway tailgating at high speed are just crazy though

On a similar note, sort of related....

My Escort is pretty quick to go, and I'll admit when out on open roads I don't always drive it like a saint (although I do drive it safely and within its limits) but it'll overtake most stuff on A and B roads. The most consistent thing I encounter is people pulling out in front of me though so I need to drive with that constantly in mind - they see the old car and think "I'll pull out, it won't be very quick" when ideally I'd like them to think "I won't pull out, because it can't stop so quick!"

New MG for 2027 - The Cyber-X. Still a concept and imo it looks fugly but competing with the jeep or replacing the Jimny, a short boxy rugged vehicle and ~300 miles range.
Possibly having a semi solid state battery (probably not) for under £30k it could be a good seller.
They just need to give it some character first.

Doesn't look any worse that recent Kia and Dacia options, more just following the trend for as box-ugly as possible (with a small hint of smell the glove - none more black).

Oh it does, the Kia's at least have some evidence of design but you're right about boxy. Personally I like boxy, boxy is useful, my last car was a Kia Soul and I loved it.

I wouldn’t buy that mg regardless of how it was powered, did they use cast off merc g wagon drawings as a starter?

Does drag coefficient not matter with EV's (or many other cars these days) or am I missing something?

Have to agree with that, we have a Kia dealer in the village, and that EV3 is really fugly!!!

Boxy can be beautiful - look at REAL Landies!

Not yet but working on it. My darkroom is under reconstruction because I am running out of space. I have B&W film of the preparations for the 200th anniversary of the Stockton to Darlington Railway as yet to be developed. That too I am getting round to developing. I have the wiring to sort out and then it is just general tidying up.

Heard a great ad on an Australian radio show today. It was done question then typical drivers moan.

Would you tailgate when walking -- come on get out of my way
Would you hassle a toddler -- bloody learners
