Per capita reports are not particularly relevant due to automation, population spread etc. Besides, the pollution is the pollution regardless of how many people are there.

I'm saying that it would make sense to group all the EU countries together since the EU largely sets policy in this area. And that was your reason for not diluting China.

So, just been for a walk in a village I go to occasionally.

It's 20mph and some drivers observe that.
Bloke drives up to shop in van. Goes into shop. Leaves van engine running. Buys coffee in shop. 5 minutes of engine running.
Another bloke appears to be delivering a parcel to a house. Leaves engine running.

Why can't drivers recognise they are in a place for people, not cars? Lefty nonsense?
Why leave your engine running for minutes, when you aren't even in the vehicle? Illegal, immoral, expensive. Lefty nonsense?

He may have made that up but we just walked the couple of hundred yards to our village shop and there were two vans parked outside, with their engines running, as we went in.

The shop is locally famous for its bakery and at lunchtime the area around it is crammed with commercial vehicles. It's just a fact of life that the drivers don't always switch off their engines, especially if they've left a mate inside.

Have seen visitors to our next door neighbours leave their 4by4 thing running while parked in the road unattended, someone walking past could just get in and drive away made no sense to me that someone would do that as their insurance wouldn’t pay out if that happened

That is happening in China. Instead of changing your car there are places where you can drive into and onto a track and the car is taken on a movable platform and the battery is changed. Apparently a 15 min process.

Speed is not all it is cracked up to be, I would prefer to live a little longer. Most of the bad driving I see now is usually by drivers in electric cars using the vehicles quite impressive acceleration. This is more apparent at busy roundabouts. Completely thoughtless!

I feel a lot safer. I know that when i overtake i can put my foot down, get instant power and fast acceleration. Speed does not mean you will live shorter. Used properly its safe.

I can get more than that even using my 1100cc motorcycle with a 24 litre tank. Around 58-60mpg I know is usual.

I was not talking about accelerating to overtake there is nothing wrong with that, it is using the vehicles acceleration capabilities to nip into a slot on a roundabout, forcing their way in and driving otherwise inconsiderately. It is a form of bullying and we don't like bullies - do we? Speed is not safe, but having proper control of a vehicle at speed is.

Unfortunately once people pass their tests they never ever do any further training and their standard is usually appalling and never improves. Have you? I have!

Some drive far too fast which is incompatible with their capabilities, especially when it is wet or icy. No signalling at junctions or roundabouts, speed limits - what are they? Drink/drug driving - why not? (Sarcasm intended) I have seen too many fatalities and don't wish to be intimately involved with one thank you.

What bike is that? I certainly got nowhere near that with my gixxer 6 :(
 
it is a 2000reg BMW R1100RS. I don't thrash it, I ride at normal speeds within the limits of the road and my personal competence, and allow for the myopic car drivers in electric cars (Well any car) Two years ago on a similar but older (1995) model I rode from A place in Germany called Cochem all the way to the Channel Tunnel and arrived with the low fuel warning light well and truly on. I had counted on a filling station on the road approaching the French coast but there were non they were all on the side away from the Tunnel. At Dover I filled up with just over 22 litres. for 288 miles. 24 litres equates to around 5.5 gals That is a shade under 60mpg. A ride I won't want to do again getting stuck in France is not my idea of fun! I can speak German but not French.

I also own a 1993 BMW K75s which is almost as good for the range and that can but not always give 65mpg, and with a smaller tank holding 21 litres (4.6gal) should give a return of not far short of the bigger bike (It weighs a lot less) It is all down to not wringing it's neck with acceleration and reading the road ahead so you do not have to brake hard or change gear so often.

Years ago I even managed to get 74mpg when riding a BMW R100RT riding from North Yorkshire down to Devon using all motorways. I was in not in any hurry and it was all top gear work

No, but at my peak was doing 50-60k a year so a lot of experience in driving. Always expect the worse/unexpected and read the road. I do drive fast if conditions allow, and am probably guilty of nipping into slots but only in a safe way and normally if that driver is driving badly or inconsiderately like yesterday (perfect conditions, someone doing 40 in a 60. If it did not impact their driving (ie cause them to swerve or break) then I dont see an issue. Pet hates for me are those who drive too slow, up your arse or middle lane hoggers.

Cochem looks like a lovely place, might put that on the list of places to go. The 6 wasn't really designed for long distance cruising, so it was crotch rocket mpg for me lol

I have done IAM with both car & bike, and also RoSPA training for bike as well. Although you cave all the training you want, but it can't prevent an A$$hole hitting you...

Some of them turn up an hour early to get nearest to our local school and park every/anywhere, then some transport their cherished offspring under a mile home, can I take my parent to court for letting me walk a mile+ 4 times a day to n from school? :ROFLMAO:

No pavement parking is having a small effect on this but the wardens need to be there 5 days a week to make a significant difference.

I would bet that most of us have left engine running in winter. Many people I know will start their car in morning to defrost and warm up and then drive (lucky, with an EV I can use my app to get the car to temp and jump right in when warm), of if waiting may leave it on to keep warm.

Also, what many fail to see is often kids will not go home after school (clubs, I would pick up and go on a 20 min drive to swim), or in fact be possible to walk. When I used to drop mine off at school I would normally then head straight to the office (or come straight from the office) and would not have time to walk back home and then drive to work (or come home from work and then walk to school).

Sorry, I've heard it all before countless times. As I asked have you done any continuation driving training?

Driving 50-60K a year does not make anyone a better driver to the standard where they have a reasonable chance of a longer life. If you start out with bad habits then chances are a driver never looses them, only compounds them. treating them as normal behaviour without further training or guidance.

In the winter I'll start it then clear the side windows (front is heated) so it's not running for ages. Couple of minutes.

The Escort I'll let it run (if it'll stay running by itself) while I lock the garage for a few minutes. That does need it more though.
