Why are Lens Hoods like gold dust?

Bought my better half a Z50 for her birthday and wanted a lens hood for the 50-250mm lens that goes with it. So, why is it so hard to find one? Ordered one from Bristol Cameras, I'm sure that they had some in stock … might be wrong. Now there is a waiting time of … they don't know. Why are they so hard to find?
I don't do Amazon, so don't direct me there or tell me I'm missing out.

They are well priced. I bought a Hitech filter holder many years ago. After waiting over two weeks for it I cancelled the order, bought one on eBay & it arrived the following day.

I wasn't really in a rush as such, but I think two weeks was taking the ****

Ordered a battery for the Z50, as a spare, from Harrisons of Sheffield. ALWAYS top service but ...

I am very sorry, but we don't have stock of the battery you ordered.

I have checked with the supplier and currently they are out of stock and unable to provide an estimated delivery date.

ARGH!

That'll teach you to buy an exotic brand/model ;)

But seriously I hope you (eventually) manage to find the items you need!

Bought it for my wife as a birthday present and trying my best to inspire a reluctant photographer to get out there and snap. I photograph all sorts of weird and wonderful things that take my interest. Who cares, they're not for anyone else.

Why don't you use Amazon if you don't mind me asking?

It's just a choice I've made. Not keen on these massive "companies" that I feel are killing off the High Street. We have NOTHING in our town in terms of choice. No sports shop, no bookshop (until last month), no outdoor shop, no camera shop and the list goes on and on. For a town with 250,000 people, nobody wants to set up here. Apart from charity shops and cafes that is.
I won't make a difference, but as I've said … it's my own choice.

Good on you! And surely the lens come with one

... or a couple of step-up rings, if it's added protection you are looking for.
Or just a good old-fashioned screw-in hood. A rubber one can fold back when not in use.

Nikon normally gave a lens hood with their lenses, a bit sad if they have stopped that to save money. :(

Whenever I have damaged a lens hood I have just searched for the lens hood model, in this case its the HB-90A, to find a compatible version, and chose the cheapest place, usually eBay. Because I was searching for lens hoods for DSLR lenses, there were more options, and they were cheap, normally around £4-£7. Because this lens is for mirrorless, and there isn't the demand or market compared to DSLRs, prices are going to be a bit more atm for compatibles, but still a huge saving on an original Nikon version. There's at least one on eBay for less than £10 atm, which compared to the ludicrous price charged for an original, £35, :$ is a huge saving. :) And others for a few £s more there.

Because of this Coronavirus, prices for anything from China/Asia are likely to rise, and goods may be hard to come by, in hopefully the short term as 'they' get it under control. If you want anything from that part of the world, and it is in stock somewhere, I would get it now. ;)

My Voigtländer lenses come with a screw on hood. They are available in loads of thread sizes as I also had one on my FE35 many years ago. Bit of a pain if you use filters though is the only issue.
That's why the bayonet mount for the lens hood is good as it also allows the use of circular screw in filters. I have my Polarizer almost permanently attached. :)

Mine is too. I don't use hoods though as blindly sticking a fingertip into the hood to turn the cpl is also a pain. But, if there isn't a bayonet attachment or the desired hood is not available, it's an option.

All the circular filters I've ever bought have a male thread to fit the lens rim and a female thread to accept a hood. My current polarising filters have the female thread built in to the rotating rim.

All sorts of things are being hit with supply chain issues at the moment.
At work we're having a real issue getting new computers.
Even on Amazon where there are an abundance of things listed, many of them are either waiting for stock to arrive from Asia or they themselves are in Asia and can't ship anything.
Usually with Amazon and ebay you can see where the seller is based and then chose to buy from a UK based seller.

I try to use a local shop wherever possible, but sometimes it just isn't possible.
If it's an older lens, you can often find one in a local camera shop because they come in with secondhand lenses. I picked up one for my 50mm from a bargain bin at CameraWorld in London. But I had to buy a 3rd party one online for my old 70-200.
With a new model of lens you'd be unlikely to find a secondhand hood sadly.
I use hoods all the time, no only to stop flare, but to protect from rain and from the element getting bashed by myself or others while walking.
