Whos your favourite photographer?

Gavin (gmen) Ellis TGSphotos. Pound for pound the best sports photographer in the UK.. But added to that he will spend time on messageboards teaching other people how to be as good (although I haven't seen anyone achieve it)

Sorry Gmen.. I know yer probably cringing :)

Philip Warner / Lithium Picnic in the US.

And in the UK, I love WakenTheDead.

Mainly because they take photos I want to take.

The late Bob Carlos Clarke
why? - mm let me think...

Messiah Kahn (but dont tell him, it'll totally go to his head!) :p
He has shown a real enthusiasm and aptitude for the profession, and demonstrated rare skill in a wide variety of situations and themes. And he keeps a level head about it too, always has time to help others. He's an inspiration.

Eamonn McCabe

Former Guardian picture editor. Four times sports photographer of the year between 1978 and 1984. News photographer of the year in 1985. Six times picture editor of the year. He's quite good.

:agree:

I have massive respect for Andy Rouse's work, but equally admire Stephen Dalton's too (both nature/wildlife photographers).

Cheers, Mark

Martin Vaugh for water drops and Jerry Uelsmann work is pretty unusual. John Shaw is quite inspiring too.

Toss up between Fay Godwin or Jeff Wall - completely and uniquely different.
Wall wins the toss most days for the sheer mentalness of his work (the one of soldeirs springs to mind), but Godwin just did honest, beautiful landscape B & Ws.

but dont tell him, it'll totally go to his head!

It won't go to my head, because im the best! :p Thanks for the love. Im no way the best photographer though. Im doing alright and slowly getting there, but ive still got a very long way until I reach where im aiming for.

As for my favourite photographer; Hmm, not sure really. But 'Marciedip', 'Blepharopsis' and 'hakanphotography' on Deviantart have ended up with quite a few of their shots amongst my favourites. Some of the Magnum photographers are also unsuprisingly brilliant.

david noton landscapes are stunning,

any other amazing landscape photographers

I have several favourites.
Again, Messiah Khan, I think your work is fantastic. I used one of your images to annotate for research in my A-Levels (don't worry, I asked your permission :p)
Ansel Adams, I think the level of depth and the stunning detail in his photos is absolutely unreal.
Pete Carr's work never ceases to stun me. It seems that he can turn the simplest of images into works of art, no matter what the particular scene he is shooting is.
Glen Sloggett's work is quite surreal, and I just love the thought that goes into each shot.

If I'm honest, I haven't seen that many photographer's work, and I should really get to an exhibition sometime. But when I see something awe-inspiring, I remember it.

Have to say, I really don't know any work by famous photographers, so I'll have to say....Marcel!! I think his 365 thread is brilliant!

Sorry i know you wanted a serious discussion, I'll stay quiet now! :coat:

It's as valid an answer as any!

Thanks :D That's really cheered me up that

I'll have to say Messiah Khan too. I may be biased being his lady BUT (in my defence) I loved his photography *before* I loved him  He's only been doing this since last April but his work is absolutely stunning. He's photographed such varied subjects but been consistent throughout and his attention to detail is incredible. I could sit and look at his work for hours and I'm always excited to see what he comes up with next...so I guess that says it all :)

In my almost 50 years, I've only ever bought one photograph for "the photograph" as opposed to the subject in the shot.....bought it from Messiah Khan after going back to it time and time again in his gallery.

It shows an amazing level of competence and understanding from someone with such a short time in the profession.

Bob

Tom Mackie....cos every picture has good composition good light and always pin, yes pin sharp

canon bob is my favorate photographer :P

Flattered though I am Ashers, I think you must be confusing me with someone who actually knows the first thing about composition and framing.

Bob

It depends on the field, for me. For speedway stuff, it would be Stephen Waller - I work with him up at the speedway at Ipswich and he's taught and helped me a huge amount. He's also a superb speedway 'tog - some of his action shots are like looking through a window at the action.

Landscapes, I love looking at shots of the Hebrides by James Smith- his processing is sometimes a little OTT for my tastes, but the majority of his shots are just so peaceful......

Tony Ray-Jones, an english photographer who took pictures i could barely dream of taking. I think composition is everything in photography, and he had this quality in abundance. have a look at some of his pics at http://www.ssplprints.com/thumbnails.php?collid=545 hope you get the time to enjoy them

Jane Bown.
One camera, one lens, no meter.
Superb pictures showing emotion and humanity/humility.
Nothing more to ask for..

Pete Carr's work never ceases to stun me. It seems that he can turn the simplest of images into works of art, no matter what the particular scene he is shooting is.

Aw, thanks :) I have photos that I like by photographers but I don't really sit down and study anyones work. Maybe I should, dunno. I like some shots by Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, people on Flickr, my mates and people here. I don't have a favourite per say. As long as people keep inspiring me, showing me that theres another area to try, another style to play with I'm happy.

My favourite photographer is Chase jarvis, seems to create shots that look impossible through the use of amazing lighting and buckets of imagination. Also he gives alot back to the comunity through his blog etc.

most impressed with Duncan McEwan scottish photographer his knowledge of natural light and how best to capture it, is amazing.

Thanks for the heads-up - just taken a look at his site!

canon bob, what shot did you buy from messaih khan

the longest lunch I ever spent was with Duncan McEwan.

This may be the wine typing but I think my fave snapper is me. Nothing to with the photos but if I'm really honest, whilst the hours can be stupidly long and the pressure massive, I haven't really done a days works since I've been wealding a camera for a living.

So, following some odd logic.... the photographer that has most affected my life is me. Who takes the shots that move me the most, that's just too tough to answer.
