Who's Shooting What and Where...upto 28/11/10

Some clubs ask if you need a runner... but not much use unless you ahve a tech to run it to :)

I once got told to enquire about runner jobs.

- All the big 5 said they very rarely use them.

I just wondered James because there were several guys there with techs and I noticed Action Images had 3 shooters there - I hadn't realised use of them was as widespread as it appeared last night.

They don't use runners so much anymore, because the tech's do the running as well.

Unfortuantely haven't been sent to either the Hartlepool or Carlisle FA Cup ties (or anything else up here) on Saturday so my weekend is just Newcastle Utd v Chelsea on Sunday. That's assuming of course the heavy snowfall we're having up here allows it to go ahead. I realise St James' Park has all the facilities to keep the pitch clear, my worry is just the approach roads and pavements.

its forecast -4 tonight so the chances of my local league game on sat at darwen v abbey hey being on is slim... probably a good job accy stanley vup tie at port vale is tonight.. hopefully that makes it OK

Just Huddersfield V Macclesfield FA Cup 2nd rd for me on Saturday.

Weather permitting, Stamford Bridge vs Ouseburn Utd tomorrow morning, and Bishopthorpe Utd vs Gypsy Moth on Sunday. Gotta start somewhere!

on my way home from port vale on supporters coach... thats accrington out of the cup... less games = less money for me

i got a great pic of the only goal of the game..but so did the only other 2 on wire (one getty) who sat near me.... sent mine to nationals as it was a packed goalmouth and ya never know exactly what they got :) sent 8 to local paper on commision,, not a bad friday.... here comes the weekend :)

hope you get something published in the nationals tony.

too cold to go out and look :)

ALL CHANGE here.. my commisioned game non league died a death... so no bookings today... am gonna make the 20 minute drive to gigg lane for bury v peterborough fa cup game instead... see if i can get owt worth publishing :)

My rugby (that I video is off) so it's watch England vs SA.

If I had more time I'd shoot down to southend to meet AFC (Martin).

Just hope my son's rugby is on tomorrow as it's their big grudge match.

HOW PATHETIC!!!

I got a cracking shot of port vales goal last night..talking fron view of goalscorer and ball going in net..not a long pull either... the getty guy obviously didnt get it... so far from the match I see a pic of the goalscorer on the ball ((c)getty).. deffo not the goal.. so they would rather use a action pic of the goal scorer than the goal :(

Believe me, it won't be the last time you're frustrated...

Believe me, it won't be the last time you're frustrated...

i have had it a few times before but usualy both with same pics... but to use a stock like pic over a goal pic..the only goal of game.. seems a bit daft....

just back from bury.. got both peterborough goals (and face on celes) in first half and came home..getting dark and unless bury fightback to win then they are the pics anyways so no point staying... got a long drive in an hr so wanted to get ready for that :)

the picture desk really should get out of the habbit of using Getty stuff no matter what. they dont get everything. makes it pointless going if they just use a getty photo no matter how cack or irrellative it is to the match in question !

It's what they've paid for though...that's the problem. They have even used stock from GI rather than mine/ours of a goal or even something from the right game! Daily mail are particularly good at doing this...

another disaster... all the way to glasgow and games off... its an indoor full size pitch and thats ok and in usee.. i got there.. the scottish fa teams got there from all over scotland.. but the tour bus of australians couldnt get from edinburgh to glasgow so its off.... am currently still in scotland but part way home.... i get paid but no after sales :(

i turned down other jobs inc as kick boxing tourny on sat night... damm :( prob back in time for one job i could do..

winter eh...

I think it's clear the photo world would be a much healthier place for all apart from Getty employees if they just vanished of the face of the Earth!! They cover everything and have deals with everyone. booo

Exactly, problem is now, they send at least 2 staffers, then have random club togs feeding through them...so the whole pitch is covered!

But why moan about it? we ALL knew what the industry was like when we started out, the big boys are always going to dominate the market and they will always have the advantage of syndicating certain clubs images. Its business and they are damn good at it

Its a challenge to get yourself to their standard :)

Its got nothing to do with getting to there standard... the papers will use an action pic of the goal scorer from getty over the actual goal pic from an independant.,. thats got nothing to do with getting to there standard...getty was sat next to me and missed the goal.. i got it..

If getty and me get the same pic I know getty are going to get printed.. if getty and me get nearly the same pic or we both get general action then getty will get printed 90% of the time...

if you actually read whats being said its got nothing to do with getty being better :(

another disaster... all the way to glasgow and games off
winter eh...

How long was the drive? Hope you didn't have a problems with the snow.

You can get their from Lancs but the Aussies can't get there from Edingburh - LOL.

If getty and me get the same pic I know getty are going to get printed.

And therein lies the challenge. You need to get a better pic than the big agencies to stand a chance.

Agreed...you can almost get something/anything as a big agency photographer, and guarantee that unless the independents have something absolutely AMAZING it'll get used.

It's a big challenge for the smaller guys to get images that are stand-out compared to the big-5.

It IS do-able...i've been there and done the smaller agency work. You just need to get something impressive and different.

Exactly, the challenge is getting to a high enough standard to rival the output of the big 5, coupled with getting the images wired bloody fast.

Personally i like the challenge of taking them on

so whats missing from my story? I got the better picture! I got the goal and getty didnt.. how much better did I need to be on that occasion? no use coming back saying i have got to be better than them... on that one occasion i was... they are just photogrpahers not gods :)

What I want to know is.

Ok I'm the sub editor (or whatever they are called) who gets to choose the photo.

Is he looking at a website/application that shows all the photos submitted from that game no matter who they came from?

If so are the photos in time order of agency or photographer order (or can choose he sort order). i.e. can he sort by time taken, so that all the shots of a goal/celebration are shown together?

Are the photos priced the same whoever they came from?

Is the usage costs the same for all Nationals or does it vary depending on circulation of that issue?

I'm just wondering if there are other things in play which discriminate against the likes of Tony?

Interesting shots the DM ran with online for the Newcastle v Chelsea game. I wasn't personally expecting useage as I know things didn't work out great for me on the day so I'm not upset about that. I just find it interesting that with both of the shots of the goalscorers (Kalou, Carroll) neither of them actually depict the goals as they are captioned to. I'm sure the offline version will have used more relevant shots. It's certainly a quirky business.

In the actual match report, they used photographs of the goals.

I've never seen it in action, but I suspect that the newspapers have subscription deals with the big agencies which means that they are paying less per photo for an international agency's pics than for Tony's freelance on-spec shot.

AFAIK, the pics sent are are subsumed into image library at the newspaper, getting automatically slurped off emails and FTP. The pic ed is likely to put search terms into that library (e.g. teams and date) and all the pics will pop up. They'll whiz through and grab the one or two that fit the layout they have and the story and that's it. I imagine they can sort it in any way they like but time taken may be the default hence the importance to get pics in quick.

I'd love to hear from a pic editor about what the actual workflow is.

Tobers

If we don't get a reply from a picture editor - I could email over to the Star/Express chaps and ask them. (I only work at the dirty grubby printers which is in a different location).

Not as far as I know. They'll be the individual wire services websites I believe.

If so are the photos in time order of agency or photographer order (or can choose he sort order). i.e. can he sort by time taken, so that all the shots of a goal/celebration are shown together?

Most of the wire services will have the ability to sort by time taken etc. But the wires will start sending within about 2-3 mins of the action, so if a sub is paying attention then they'll know when to expect the pics.

Are the photos priced the same whoever they came from?

The big-5 offer subscription based services. Therefore there wouldn't be a "per image" payment from these guys. I believe the subscription payments are the same (through necessity not agreement). Obviously, this has a massive impact on whether Tony etc. will sell. Hence me saying that it needs to be a VERY VERY good image to persuade them to be parted from their "hard earned".
