I fancied starting a thread here regarding Hi-Fi turntables, or general Hi-Fi, it's another passion of mine apart from photography.

Presently using a old Dual 504 turntable with a AT440MLa cartridge, sounds fine but fancy upgrading to something better, I'll upload a photo asap.

What have you....?? Please feel free to show your Audio wares.

Thanks;
Peter

i actually have a Garrard 301 i've been considering moving on......
i've been all digital for years, can't be doing with the faff of vinyl
i like that i have 132gb of music in my phone that picks up where it left off via magic (bluetooth) when i get in the car :)

Some of the classic turntables fetch a surprising amount.

I still have a systemdek which was designed by the same guy that did the sondek. Had it quite a few years now. I play vinyl about once a year if I remember.

Thanks for the compliment. It's the first turntable I've built, I normally build custom cameras! It's on the way to its' new owner owner, hope he likes it!

Although my current vinyl spinner is the basic Dual 504 turntable, I've owned these in the past, in no particular order;

Pierre Lurne Audiomeca Romance (French), quite fragile

Townshend Rock

Michell Orbe SE - SME V - Lyra Lydian

Linn LP12 - Ittok

I'd love to find a clean/original Roksan Xerxes turntable.

Steve, which tonearms would that tweaked 1210 accept I wonder.....? Unipivots - SME etc....?

You don't want an original Xerxes. They fall to pieces. The suspension collapses on them. A mate used to have one. It's a well known fault. The top board also seems to sag. Power supplies are also troublesome. If you like fixing stuff then one might make a hobby :)

Think all the other turntables you have had are a lot better. The roksan is quite clinical sounding.

What might you suggest?

I like my hi-fi sound quite punchy and dynamic to be honest.

Another of whatever was your favourite one previously would be a starting point. If you can find a hifi shop that still demos record players it's easier just to listen to a few and see what appeals.

I'm happy with an old systemdek so I'm probably not the best person to ask :)

I decided to give it another go earlier on this year and bought a Project Essential 11, unfortunately I havent had as much time as I would have liked to listen to my vinyl collection but hopefully that will change over the winter.

I've around 550 vinyl albums in my collection, I'm mainly into jazz - funk - vocal music.

I'd love a VPI Scout Master with the JMW-9 Signature tonearm, a lot of money ok, but ozzzes quality/performance all day long.

Dual 506 here, not exactly the best, but enough to satisfy the vinyl urges when they arise. 'Normal' listening comes from the PC through my stereo, but when I actually want to sit, listen and appreciate, out comes the vinyl.

I have 2 turntables both serviceable.

Pioneer PL12D with an Ortofon cartridge

Rega Planar 3 currently with a Shure Cartridge.

I need to refurbish the Rega at some point but I have spent a lot of time since May travelling. I have to have some surgery in January and will be able to overhaul my hi-fi kit during my recovery at home.

My youngest some has, at the age of 26, decided he likes the 'sound' of vinyl albums and the warmth actually sitting and listening to the vinyl album brings. I resisted bringing up the value of the interconnects bring to the mix but my original 'Wish you were here" vinyl plate at a decent level seemed to lift his mood for more. My CD of the same album in currently in his car.

Not high end by any means, but I have a Technics SL-6 Linear and Project 0.5, both still work fine and sound quality seems about the same.

The Linear is very compact and can be programmed to play selected tracks, but it relies on a gap between the tracks to work satisfactorily.

I was surprised to find that so few people still have what I class as hi-if preferring a gadget that a mp3 player slots into.
My gear is decidedly low budget (Teac amp ,tuner and cd deck plus Tannoy speakers) but would never replace them with a modern day music centre

Not anymore for me but have had a few over the years. I don't remember all of the exact names, but have had in no particular order - Pioneer PL12, Project something or other, a Linn (sondek perhaps??) a Garrard (don't recall the number) - but the best I had was a Rega Planar 9. Only CDs now though, too much faff and - sacrilege I know - but these days I can hear no difference and prefer the CD sound (mind I do have a good CD deck too)

I miss my PL12D. Not the greatest turntable ever but infinitely customisable. Back in the 70"s it was one of the must have budget turntables. Exchange the standard head for a light weight SME version was one option. Then everything changed. High head mass was the in thing. So the SME got stuffed with plasticine and the Sure V15 was replace with a moving coil pick up ( Ortofon I think) Great days.

Yep I have

Technics 1210 highly modded with a Origin Live Encounter MK3c arm . Shelter 5000 MC cart , Mike new bearing and platter Timestep external power supply

Pro Ject 10.1 TT with optical Ground it base and power supply / speed control

Pioneer PL570X

Kenwood PL5022A

Gerrard 401

Denon DP47 F

I've got an oldish system, nearly 30 years old but still sounds good. Linn Basik turntable, Creek amp and Linn Index speakers.

one of these - http://vinylnirvana.com/ar-models/ar-the-turntable/

A&R Cambrdge E77 Cartridge onboard (that's probably at the end of its useful life)

Problem is, the AR has the "usual problem" with the grumbling sound from the main motor bearings, and sourcing a uk spec. replacement motor was pretty difficult last time I looked into it a few years ago... probably cheaper to actually just swap to a Rega, but it's so rare these days that I actually have the time and inclination to sit and really listen to music, it's not a priority.

I've an an analogue problem...... I can't stop looking at VPI turntables, especially the 'Prime' model.

American porn --- turntable lust mode.

The number one has all that technology yet should that rubber belt break or stretch it's game over.

That's not a rubber belt.

That's a spacetime anti-distortion wow belt.

It's made by seven weeping virgins from Wigan.

It's made of hen's teeth and unicorn hair.

Jeez....do you know nothing?

Fiendishly clever how they disguised it to look like a rubber belt then, guess that's what you pay half a million quid for. Those seven Wigan virgins spoilt it a bit though, come on who is going to believe that?
