I went in to the doc today to get my ears syringed - this is a process where the doc forces water into the ear canal and then sucks the ear wax out using a thin vacuum. It was a deep cleansing with several large chunks of wax coming out of both ears. I'm talking about penny-size blobs that were stuck on the end of the vacuum nozzle. It felt painfully good - such a weird yet satisfying feeling!

The doc was surprised how much gunk was in there and so was I, but considering that over the past 2 weeks my hearing had been deteriorating quite badly, there was bound to be a lot of crap. I must say, though, that now I can hear EVERYTHING - it's freaky. Just walking out the doc's office, hearing my clothing rubbing against me was damn strange - I thought something was wrong at first... car keys... water dripping... and then when I got home, the first thing I tried out was music. Sweet jesus wept.

If you haven't done it already, I highly recommend getting your ears sucked by an ENT. I'm booked in to see this guy now every 9 months... can't wait for the next session :lol:
 
I had it done once, didnt make any noticable difference to be honest :( just felt like I had had a good yawn.
 
Have had mine done about 6 times in total, I actually have no problem having them done and it is a wonderful experience as you describe but bear in mind your ears need to secrete a waxy lubrication as part of the hearing process and in a few days time your hearing will not be as crisp as it was immediately afterwards.

I remember the first time I had mine done, like you I was amazed at the stuff that came out :eek:.

I found mine got bad when I used to ride every day, mainly due to the compression via foam ear plugs. I had them syringed and got some gel ear plugs (the ones that are moulded to your ears) which has made life much better.

I now use ear drops for a couple of nights evey month to prevent the build up.

Last time I had it done, the nurse said that she gets "so many" people saying thank you afterwards.... I must admit. being without decent hearing is not a nice experience...

I do suffer from a bit of hearing loss actually. Probably because Im an old man.

Do you have to get referred by your doctor? Did you go because of a specific problem, or you just fancied a clearout? lol
 
last time i had my ears syringed it was bacause id lost my hearing, the doc prescribed me to put oil in my ears to soften the wax for a few days before then the nurse syringed my ears, they didnt do any sucking though, just the warm water shifted some serious plugs of wax out of my ears.


my hearing aint great but i tend to try to get some drops in them every so often and give them a good wash out with the shower head in the shower
 
I was born hard of hearing (60% deafness), so I doubt any amount of ear syringing can cure me. :D ;)

I had gone complete deaf in one ear due to impacted wax buildup and my good one was a bit blocked too. The doc recommended I get it done.:)
 
STRONGLY advise to use Warm olive oil in the ears a couple of days before hand as said, also,my ENT specialist strongly advised against of the shelf ear drops as with prolonged use can damage hearing.

My hearing has gone down over the last twenty years to about 30% and without my aids I,m practically deaf.

With the aids I hear things ,but in a muffled way.
Imagine if you will a badly tuned radio ,you hear it but cannot make much sense of it.

Slowly drives you :bang::bonk:

Thanks for that advice. I was told to use sodium bicarbonate drops 3 x a day for 3 days before the syringing. I won't use this any more now that the blockage is gone, but the doc did say that getting warm water in the ears when bathing or showering is actually a good thing - this naturally cleans out the ears of excess wax.

Sorry about your hearing - I can relate to your frustration :(
 
I've had mine done a few times now. Usually a few weeks after a bad cold I go deaf in one or both ears. Its like wearing ear plugs all the time. I usually put a few drops of warm olive oil in every night for a week before I go to soften things up.

2nd time I went the nurse went to far into my left ear. Now I have to be careful around deep base sounds as my ear drum 'flaps' and causes some pain :(
 
So the nurse permanently damaged your hearing due to an error made during syringing? Did you take the matter further?
 
Had mine done several times in the past due to working in dusty conditions they said. I am now told I need two hearing aids due to deafness. I also have that curse Tinnitus which means I have singing in my ears all the time but not birdsong! Canna hear the wee birds now very well. That gets me down as I used to enjoy hearing the birds singing in the spring.

he can hear the sound of a penny dropping on grass though!! ;) :lol:
 
Penny on grass.lol doubt it ,but it is funny with tonal deafness like mine.

I can hear the high end of the frequency better than the low end, so most people raise and lower their voices when talking ,so I usually only get 1/4 of the conversation.
You then tend to fill in the gaps with guesswork, Get some funny looks sometimes and know I've guessed wrong............:eek:


Can relate to that Sawman ,bloodwell got tinnitus as well....:shake:

Whistling in one ear and hoover noise in- tother....:gag:
 
I've had a continual low level hiss in both ears for months - I should get this done. Did you just go to your GP?
 
You have to GP first for referral, it could be wax and disappear with syringing,
But if it's tinnitus there is no cure.:'(

PS, do the warm olive oil thing a couple of days before you go the Docs,as he might do it there and then.

They never get that far as they usually hit me on the back of the head when I bend down to get them. :lol:
I was at the docs the other week as the tinnitus has got worse. You can get maskers to wear. Thing like a hearing aid. The doc also told me that they can actually stop the ringing sound. They do something inside your ear & it is gone. So is your hearing to though.:shrug:.
When Janice visits I keep her on my left side at all times. Then I dinae hear the Essex accent to much:p.
