Yes
Got a speeding fine, doh.

I have 28 days to respond with the details of the driver.

Here's my issue, I'm going to canada in May and I need to take my driving license with me to rent a car, I assume I'll have to send my driving license away for this, anyone know how long it takes to get it back?

It varies between Police Forces. It shouldn't do - but it does. Wiltshire are very quick - almost by return of post. Barstewards.

Well I'm not going to send it off and cross my fingers cos if i do that and it doesn't come back I'll have no way of driving my rental car in canada. If I can find out it takes longer than what I have then my wife will take the points.

just need to know how long it will be

My SP30 took about 3 weeks to come back

I've had 2 in the past 12 months :-(
First time got away with it by doing a Speed Choice workshop which I thought was brilliant at the time but obviously made no lasting as I did it again! 34mph in 30 zone and then 40 in 30 zone. Didn't take long for the licence to come back but make sure you tell your insurance co. as soon as the points have been added - not at your next renewal. If you don't tell them and have an accident your insurance is invalid:-(
Oh and my premium has gone up by 10% which isn't bad, some companies really load you.

If it is that important, phone them.

Okay, so you leave it until day 28 (for example), sign the form, they ask for your license within 14 days, and then you'll definitely not have it back.
or, you keep hold of it in the hope the won't ask, you go to Canada, and find you've got additional penalties for not sending it off.

if it were me, I'd do it, and do it now.

What about taking the licence to a County Court done there and then. Not sure if every county can do that, but i know Sussex did.

you forgot option number 3.

My wife claims it was her and she sends of her license instead

Oh yes....
Thankfully, all of them here in Germany where you don't get awarded points...

Ahhh but Rob, 300kph doesnt need points - needs Lewis Hamilton likey at the wheel so they assume you are good. :)

tell me more?

so is the process like this:

i get the form telling me about the fine

I send it off

I get a letter requesting my license

And i have a TomTom with speed-camera alerts...doesn't help against mobile checkpoints though...
I do think it very civilised that you can swipe your card on the spot to get a reduction in the fine - costs 20% extra if you pay later on...

Indeedy - the Germans + Motoring = a match made in heaven. Your car wouldnt be half as much fun here in Blighty (legally that is :naughty:)

If I can find out it takes longer than what I have then my wife will take the points.

I am sure that you would never lie about who was actually driving and get someone else to take the points.
That is an offence in itself ;)
however if you wife was driving ;)
tell her to be more careful next time :)

I might have had a couple of the years :shake: although now with a clean license (obviously not trying hard enough :D

Your in a sticky situation, normally I'll ignore the first letter (ok it has been a good few years since I got one) and on two occasions have not heard anything back. Last one I was stopped and they didn't register those so was fine.

If you've been stopped and they've handed the ticket I'ld send it now and hope for the best (call them first)...

I could have done today on my driving lesson, overtook a cyclist and realised I was doing 35 in a 30... oh noez! I'm a speeder before I've even got my license

Send it back on day 24 saying wife was driving.
They take 14 days to send back asking if wife was driving
Wife waits 24 days then replies saying, no not me driving, remembered it was husband (you) driving.
They take 14 days to send back asking if you driving.
You wait 24 days then send back saying yes me driving.
They take 14 days to ask for your licence within 28 days.
Waiti 24 days then send in license.

Receive license 10 days later,

Best part of 4 months has passed since offence.......

Disclaimer: may not take that many days, never tried it. I did it after the wife got points whilst I worked for a hire car company, letter to car hire co, back to police, letter to me, back to police, letter to wife, back with license request, then points and license returned.

SP60 here about 8 yrs back.

got licence revoked, and put back to learner, basically.
had to re-do theory & practical. it was that stinkin law if you get 6 points in first 2 yrs.
i did 52 in a 30, it was a dual down to one lane with road works early one morn about 7am. no bloody work peeps in sight but one cop out of car with radar gun.

He just let me drive past, next thing i know, got letter in post. Girlfriend, now wife was not pleased. i was without car for a while.

still got 100% on theory 2nd time round. and about 3 lessons to rid bad habits n back on road, with another 2 yr to keep steady.

not sure about time it all took sorry.

Apply for a replacement license online saying you've lost the original, pay the £18 and when it arrives send one of your licenses in to get the points added. If it doesn't come back in time you still have one to take abroad.

Yeah, you could either send it off, or go to a court, but just remembered it was Magistrates court. Take the form to them hand over the fine and license they write on it then stamp it and hand it back to them.

Try phoning them and explaining your going on holiday they might extend the paying the time frame.

thanks all for the options, I think I'll declare it was me, see how long it takes for them to send it back, if it is soon then phone the dvla and ask how long it will take, if they estimate too long i'll say I lost my license and get it put on the new one. If not i'll send it away

If your close to Swansea you could speed the process off by dropping it off at the office yourself, had to do that when I first moved back to the UK...

Don't bother with your local DVLA office as they'll only send it on to Swansea anyway :D

When I took my driving test in 1962 all it took was 10 minutes driving around and 3 simple questions such as what comes after green on traffic lights? By the way the incorrect answer is " Sorry officer I didn't stop to find out", or when musn't you overtake or third when mustn't sound your horn.

School signs were a flaming torch. We did have to learn hand signals which isn't taught now I believe.
A lot of cars still had trafficator arms, flashing indicators were still relatively new.

Things are so different now

Touch wood No speeding ticket of parking fine or motoring offence to date, must be some sort of record.

Presuming your name is actually Joe Scrivens, just hope someone at the 'Divla' doesn't search your name and come up with this when you send the license in ;)

I got opne of these at Christmas. Sent back the "grass yourself up" form and then got the conditional offer. I took it and my licence to the local office and had my license back, suitably endorsed, about 5 mins later.

No worries.

I had a similar problem one year when I was going to France. I just phoned the number on the ticket and told them that I would be out of the country until the date of my return.
They where fine about it. Just said that I had to sort it on my return and would make a note on my file.

Kev.

Never been done for speeding. Why? I stay within the law - I don't drive over the speed limit, they are there for a purpose. Sermon over!

p.s. I've been driving for more than 40 years.

Bo-oooring...!

Is there a number on the letter??, if so ring it and explain the situation, if not pop along to the local station and explain the situation to them ask for a phone number to contact whoever you need to deal with.

When I got caught, the turn around was REALLY fast - posted and returned within about 4 days. They get it, stamp it and chuck it back at you!

I'd only been driving for about 20 minutes, though - had I been on a 40 year run it may have been longer! :D

(Run as in, in the car, not on legs - not only would I be dead but not able to exceed any speed limit)

Never had one, don't intend to get one.
Always give myself plenty time and switch the music on and enjoy the journey.

I love speed but not on the PUBLIC highway.
Anyone can put the foot down but it takes an engaged person to be able to read the road ahead and observe driving situations as they unfold.

I have no time for speeders!
