Right, got a Discovery 2 with one working headlight. Noticed this on the way home from work when I could only see the reflection of one light in the bumper of the car in front. Obvious answer? Swap the headlight bulb. New bulb does come on after a few seconds but the full beam doesn't work.

So, new bulb in left side:
Dipped beam, working (ish). Full beam, not working.

That's odd, let's put the old one back:
Dipped beam, not working (as before). Full beam, working.

Now I'm confused!
 
Bad earth I expect. Check all the earths beside the fuse box under the bonnet. There are also a few behind each headlight.
 
Earth connections are clean as a whistle. They're dual filament bulbs, so probably dodgy, the spare is only a cheap one. To the shops!
 
It is a land rover, it will have faults..........:p

On lots of 4x4`s ,it is common practice to run an extra earth from engine to chassis. The vehicles are usually large and one earth is not always enough.
 
You got to pull the wick out and light it first.
 
I'd get the fella who walks in front with a flag to take a look ;)
 
I've had a bulbs blow on my disco over my 6 years of ownership, but it's never caused the symptoms you describe. Can't see how a cheap bulb would cause that either but I await to proved wrong.
 
With the bulbs being cheap it may just be that part of the filament has gone, not sure
 
Put a 9V battery across the contacts of the bulb to see if the filaments glow gently. OR, if you have one, use a continuity tester to check the bulb. Take care not to touch the "glass" if it's a Halogen bulb though.
 
There was a guy a while back on here who completely rebuilt a landy. He had a blog/website showing the process of taking the whole thing to bits, refurbishing everything and then putting it all back together. Can't remember his name but a search may turn him up. What he didn't know wasn't worth knowing.
 
Discovery 2s are very different to series motors. I doubt the guy who rebuilt it knows that much about the electrical systems of a disco unless he happens to own one too.
I've owned mine for 6 years and done pretty much everything possible on it and there isn't much I don't know about it, but I wouldn't know much at all about a series motor as they are completely different technologies.
 
All up and running now, got a couple of 'proper' bulbs and fitted them this evening. Thanks for the various suggestions, both helpful and otherwise ;)

I think that the with one of the cheap bulbs the first of the two filaments had gone, and in the other bulb the 'second' filament had gone. Just some sort of vaguely humorous coincidence.
