Ok I've not developed my film for about 6 months because I've been busy and now I've just realised that I cannot remember which bottles are which! The labels have all fallen off (every one!!) .

So I have 8 concertina bottles, 4 with red lids and 4 with white lids. I THINK that the red ones are film but not really sure....

Anybody any idea how I can work out which are which without risking wasting a film....

You may have to sacrifice a few frames of a test film i think. Unless you just dev a sheet of paper in the one you think is paper dev and see what happens? If the reults are outside your normal dev time or results then it should hopefully be fairly apparent if it's correct or not.

What's in the 4 bottles? Dev, Stop, Fix and ??????

Fixer stinks and Stop smells like vinegar so it should be fairly easy to identify the dev once you've worked out which set are which?

No, I have 4 bottles each of paper and film developer. I also have 2 bottles of film fixer but I know that that has black lids :) It is all Ilford stuff.

check the ilford fact sheets for the pH values of the developers you've got - then get some PH checking papers like we used to use at school...

perceptol should be 7.68-7.82
ID-11 8.6-8.7
Microphen 8.67 - 8.93

whereas

MULTIGRADE will be 10.45–10.55
PQ UNIVERSAL 10.48– 10.58
BROMOPHEN 10.30–10.50

are yes, the film dev is ID-11 and the paper dev is Bromophen :)

ooh ooh ooh - does that mean I've actually come up with something helpful for once ???

Yes but I don't have any universal paper to check the PH :)

I will see what I can sort out !

You could have a first guess by testing how soapy it feels on your fingers. Strong alkaline like the paper developer should feel more soapy then the almost neutral film developer.

hmmm......

I can't do that as I have serious issues with the chemicals touching my skin !

BUT I am 80% sure that the red caps are the FILM developer. So do I stick a quick cheap film in and test it or stick the film in that I took today..... Arr sod it I'll try and develop today's film and see what happens, I can always take my grand daughter back to the canal to feed the ducks :D
