I have known about deviant art for a while now through my web design period.

But now i have decided to sign up to see what all the fuss is about.. you can sell you images direct from there... you only make a little amount of money..

like they charge £12.99 for a certain print and then you only get £1.99.

if anyone else has a deviant art account could they let me know how they benifit from it..
 
I've got one, but it hasn't been used in 18 months at least! It took an age to upload photographs (one at a time) and I think these days it is just full of rubbish. No positives from me :(
 
I have a DA account. It sat dormant for about 18 months during which time I got an email from an Indian company wanting to use one of my images for an advertising campaign. Several email later and it's sold for several hundred pounds! Needless to say I've reactivated the account ;)

EDIT: It don't use their print facility. I'd not want to send prints out directly without seeing them first. Where's the quality control?
 
yeah i agree with you... unless you put that you dont have quality control and that all prints are created through deviant art.

what image was it by any chance...
 
i signed up to it once a couple of years ago, saw it then never used it again
 
I use DA, I signed up for the premium print service but now don't use it to sell at all. They pay you very little, and whilst with a premium acount you can set your cut, it just bumps the overall price up. You also have to earn so much before they'll pay you. I now use DA just as a gallery, and to do a bit of networking.
 
I use it for feedback, not selling. Especially with the newly-implemented Critique system.

Although I do have a bit of a mix of photography, "traditional" art, and crafts on there!
 
I'll add another point about DA. There's some excellent work on there, if you can bear trawling through all the other ****, and fair one, a lot of **** there is. There's too many 18 year old girls who want to show how cool they are to the world, and think that stripping off and taking self portraits without a tripod, or with a webcam :eek: is the way to do that. I still use it though, and once you've seen some of the work on there you can see it's worth being a member. You just have to see past all the **** on there.
 
Yes, I agree, there is some quality stuff if you don't mind hunting through the garbage!

I haven't used DA for myself but I do sometimes have a look around on the website Didn't know you could sell images on there but the cut seems ridiculous, might sign up though just to have a normal account.
 
I registered a deviant art account so I could look at the nudie photos. Haven't used it for anything other than that.
 
I only have a normal account, for now, there is no point in me subscribing! x

And I'm well and truly hacked off with dA at the minute. I just trawlled through 4 pages solid of nothing more than camera phone or camera-in-the-mirror myspace porno ****.
 
I've got a DA Account i just find having to explain everything about the piece you are uploading a hassle, Flickr you just upload and if you care to explain about your images you have the choice to.
 
That is annoying, would be better if you could just leave comments blank.
 
I've had a DA account for a while. Just a basic one, nothing fancy. I use it for inspiration, although as others have said, there is a fair amount of dross on there to hunt through to find good stuff.

I do find that it's less of a popularity contest than Flickr though. Your mileage may very well vary though.

Another vote for redbubble! My gallery on my signature is my bubblesite, and all the photos there can be found through a search in the main redbubble site, so it's quite convenient! Don't have it to sell anything, I had the option to choose if my photos were for sale or not, and I thought, why not. It's just a great way to have an online gallery of your work!
 
I have a DA account but I only use it to post my work and the occasional journal but not prints. I find the community there to be very unhelpful in regards to actually posting useful feedback, and as already mentioned, there's a lot of rubbish on there before you get to the good stuff!

There's a lot of networking and finding the right people but you can get useful feedback if you push.

Basically, in response to the OP, if you're on dA already and you use the site, it might be worth selling your prints on there. But don't sign up just for that.
