I'm having an image printed for use in an exhibition early next year, but as it is my first time printing I have no idea who to use!

I've had a look at Loxley & Peak Imaging

Can anyone give me any help on who to pick? I've been looking a block prints & framed images, size 16x12 & 16x24, and they obviously need to be very high quality.

As the image is also up for sale, I need to be able to make some sort of profit on it.

Many thanks in advance.

Jake

Hi Jake. Have you checked FinerWorks? They ship everywhere and I've always been very satisfied with their prints. They offer giclee as well as lab.

Loxley

I've never used this company but they do offer 11 different print samples for £5+vat to give you an idea of what finishes are available both C-type and Giclee as mentioned in #2

Might be worth a try to actually see the range of finishes available

"Each sample pack contains 11 prints:
- C-types: Fuji Matt, Fuji Gloss, Fuji Flex & Kodak Metallic
- Giclees: Hahnemuhle Photorag, Hahnemuhle Pearl, Hahnemuhle German
Etching, Epson Semi-Gloss, Harman Gloss Warmtone, Canson Baryta &
Canson Aquarelle Rag. "

The print samples arrived this morning - £6 well spent for the quality sample comparisons - very good quality indeed.
Saves a lot of leg and guess work

Mine should be here Tuesday they said!

I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the papers and the range of finishes available.

Really inspirational stuff there with a wide range of finishes to suit many different ideas and themes.

The only problem I had was with the postman.

The A4 samples arrived in big, sturdy white cardboard envelope with big red lettering - "DO NOT BEND" on the front

He bent it to get it through the letter box, creased one long side and dog eared two corners.....even though the porch door wasn't locked

Doh!

I'm looking forward to mine arriving!

You should ring up for some compensation, stupid postman!

I am looking forward to getting my image printed!

Perhaps we can discuss and share thoughts on the different options and finishes in this thread - it's all relevant to gallery images.

I've got a couple of favorites already................ but that might change by Tuesday

Yeah thats a good idea!

I shall keep you updated!

my thoughts on the papers are that it's clear the c-types have less colours than the giclee (inkjets), the c-types are sharper, most of the textured papers are awful, and it would have been a lot easier to compare prints with the same image on each sheet

fujiflex is amazing

The same print on each would have been a good idea - but that surely depends on the subject matter in question?

It's a matter of taste - I could find a subject matter suitable for the textured finishes but that's entirely subjective for my likes, dislikes and needs.

I didn't think any of them were awful - just an inspiring range of options available on the market.

This. even if it was an uninspiring montage/chop of many different textures it would have been usefull. As it is, the gloss C-type is pretty incredible, although the gamut doesn't seem to be there to match some of the inkjets

I do love those gloss C types though :D

edited it for you lol

are the prints going behind glass?

edited it for you lol

Am I missing something POAH?

I was merely stating that in response to an earlier post - this particular company offer samples of both C-type and giclee prints to compare results and effects?

Giclees are produced by inkjets aren't they and C-types by laser on light sensitive paper?

If I wasn't confused before - I am now

FWIW - An entirely subjective personal view and my thoughts on the various print samples in the same order as the supplier sends them out.

According to the suppliers website - C-types have more colours available than Giclee's and are printed at a much higher density giving the deepest blacks. Note: - I am not a printer - I am only repeating their comments on the web.

Giclee - Canson Aquarelle Rag - Sample image as used in the Lynx campaign - "Angels will fall" - superb textured effect. Ideal for art, graphics and abstracts

Digital C-type - Fuji Gloss - A B&W shot of a Ferrari - deep blacks and high gloss - Love it

Digital C-type - Kodak Metallic - A night time city scape with high gloss finish - Stunning

Digital C-type - Fuji Matt - A gorgeous portrait of a beautiful model - fabulous skin tones - the model looks like Keira Knightley or Natalie Portman

Digital C-type - Fuji Flex - A superb gentle sunset - full of pastel tones - love it

Giclee Epson Semi-gloss - Not enough interest, contrast or drama for me - average. A different image may have had a different effect for me.

Giclee Canson Baryta - Seascape - Soft and gentle - great effect

Giclee Hahnemuhle Pearl - The only one I didn't like straight out of the box - but a different sample image may have produced better results for me

Giclee Hahnemuhle Photorag - Stunning B&W image of a weightlifters powdered hands - Love it. The rag effect makes you think you could reach out and touch the hands in front of you

Giclee Hahnemuhle German Etching - Absolutely love it. Stunning delicate, artistic textured effect on a portrait of a beautiful woman

Giclee Harmann Gloss Warmtone - Eye popping colours and warm skin tones - love it.

Apart from making me think about giving my camera away and just enjoying the work of others, these samples have really inspired me to think about my images in a different way.

nope I have sampled from 4 or 5 different printing companies, and Hahnemuhle pearl is always awful, it's just a nasty paper, don't use it. :D

IMO Canson Baryta is 10x nicer than Hahnemuhle Baryta, so the print space did well to choice Canson over the alternatives

Giclee is just a pretentious name for an inkjet print.

LOL - What's in a name?

I did think Giclee represented a better quality paper and archival quality inks though - not just any old ink and paper combo.

It is also possible to download the print profiles into Photoshop for theses papers from the print space website so that you can see the effect of each paper on your own images.

A valuable free resource to try out and get the creative brain cells going.

I've gotta try those C-types......................................

yes but all that will show you is how the paper responds to colours, so you can adjust your file accordingly, not the actual textural quality of the paper
and the main difference in these papers is how they look in the light, the sheen, the metallic-ness, the depth- really you'll just have to make prints and see

But it's better than nothing or a stab in the dark - until they start to make 3D printers I can afford ;)
