Who said farmers were poor?

there really is b****r all money in dairy these days -

I'm not disagreeing, Pete. Especially with the price of feed.

I'm guessing the older land owner farmers are in a better position than the younger tenant farmers?

Out of interest, has said farmer ever claimed poverty?

Not to my knowledge.

.

possibly though most of the landowner farmers i know are so mortgaged that they may as well not own their land and can't retire because their kids have gone into other lines of work and they couldnt service the mortgage on a pension (and no one wants to buy the farm)

probably the best position to be in as a dairy farmer is either to have sufficient flexibility to diversify or specialise , although both of those options require ready cash yo make the change

...live on the proposed HS2 route :D
That's not as funny as it sounds, ironic, yes.
A local Farmer that I know, has the defunct ( Beecham's Axe fell (oops :D ) on it years ago) Oxford line running across one corner of his farm. Some 350 acres IIRC.
10 odd years ago now, the rail company, or who ever, wanted to buy a field around 20 acres, near the line, for a works yard and road access, they offered him just shy of 10 million quid.
As I understand it, he thought about it ......................... for milli-second.
The line however remains closed and the access & yard remains un built.
