Who owns a .co domain

I have been thinking about getting a .co domain. My main fear is people thinking its a typo for .co.uk or .com.

So I wondered, how many of you lovely people, own a .co domain?
 
I have a .co.uk, .uk and .com variants of my domain and that's all I'll have. all these extra domains being made available will never be used and will just confuse people.

I've been offered a .wales and .cymru - Who the hell is going to want to type that (or remember it) instead of .co.uk

At the end of the day it's just done to try and take more money of your hands.
 
don't you have to be a registered company to own a .co.uk domain?

I always thought it was short for "company".

The reason I ask is the domain I want is taken both .com and .co.
 
.co is the top level domain country code for Colombia.

It is deregulated so you can use it, but Google will only be nice to you if your website / business is globally targeted (unless you are in Colombia). Lots of bigger companies use it, especially for shortcodes, like Twitter have t.co and GoDaddy have x.co. They're clearly targeting a global audience though. So if you're not, you're only hampering yourself.

ETA: Not sure if Google have changed that policy, they say it's generic now. Either way, I don't see the point of risking it.
 
I always wondered why you can't get a top level .uk domain as .co.uk seems a bit "messy" to me and is a mouthful if you ever need to read it out to someone
most other countries seem to offer top level domains such as .co for columbia so why not the uk?

You can, it has been possible to register new second level domains directly under .uk since June 2014. Existing holders of .co.uk , .org.uk (and a few others) domains have squatters rights on the equivalent .uk domain until 2019 though.

Same policy in Oz and NZ. We have .com.au and they have .co.nz. (or .somethingelse.au)

Well choose a different one then. People in the UK who see your domain name written will probably read it as .com or .co.uk regardless. And people who hear it spoken will definitely get it wrong.

My justification for this: my first name and surname are both perfectly ordinary names, but they both have variants with different spellings which are significantly more common. Robinson is about 4-5 times more common than Robertson, and Stuart is similarly more common than Stewart. *Most* people spell one or other of my names wrongly, even when they are replying to something which I have written and which obviously has my names spelt out.
 
With the raft of other top level domains available, I'm sure you can be a bit more inventive.

The annoying thing is that the .com and co.uk are only parked domains. Companies that own them both want $3000+ for them.
