I am about to have a website built and a friend who was going to do this for me has let me down...
I dont have a massive budget but dont expect to get something for nothing either....

So..

Where did you have your website built? did you do it yourself or did you have a company do it for you? if it was a company, who and how much do they charge?

The website im looking for needs to have a panel where customers can log in to view their pictures, a way for them to purchase them online and a way for them to book a session...

Any ideas from you guys would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

Leon

made mine myself, but i already knew a fair bit of HTML, css and javascript.

there are a load of off the shelf store/galleries. personally i use photocart, its not cheap but its a one off cost and its really good. they're currently working on an overhawl released shortly.

Im capable of building myself, but really couldnt be bothered, so Im using zenfolio at the moment. Im still on the trial to see how it goes, but Ill probably purchase when it runs out. It has full use of shopping carts for prints and also you can set up private areas for clients to log in.Pretty simple to set up and looks reasonable.

I did mine too.

While I am a programmer I really haven't a clue about web dev or design so I just use word press for mine and self host it on some free web space. All it's cost me so far is time playing with themes/plugins/look and a fiver or so for the domain. However I wouldn't recommend free hosting for any business, it's rather flaky at times. It may however be useful for testing/showing people for opinions until you are ready to deploy to a live server.

If you want customer logons, zenfolio seemed to be popular with wedding togs when I was "shopping" for one recently. In all cases this was a link away from the togs website to the zenfolio site which was passworded. The main site was usually a Wordpress site with an appropriate theme.

I made mine myself... but I'm a web designer by trade.

Expect to pay around £50 a year for hosting, £5 a year for a domain and it's hard to say on the price of a site you are wanting something that may not be to cheap, you are probably looking around £500 (and that's cheap).

Let me know if you need any help.

I built my own [non-commercial] site with a customised Gallery2 for the photos section and some other stuff with PHP and a MySQL back-end, but I've been doing HTML for seventeen years.

[cripes!]

I use Photoshelter for my website, it works out about £20 per month.

I'm a web developer, so as you can guess, created my own.

For my corporate site however I used an off the shelf solution because we already had it licensed although we'll problem go back to an in house creation soon enough.

Mine are a work in progress, they are not difficuly just 'fiddly' in that you can have everything set up and you make a minor change it kills the whole lot and takes hours of sorting to fix the problem, I'v done afew for people I know and have a reseller account so I'v charged £300 for 1yr hosting+domain+a few dozen static pages inc art work.
What Grant said is about right pricewise.

...you are probably looking around £500 (and that's cheap).

I'd expect about £500+ from a freelancer. £2k+ from a reputable agency. But it all depends on exactly what you need it to do. For a complex system, you could easily pay 10k. But that doesn't mean you can't get it for less than that.

It's a minefield tbh. So many options, and a vastly varying quality of work across the board.
