Morning

Not been here for a while and started thinking about picking up my camera again. Had a busy couple of years with work (not really showing signs of slowing down) but started to realise it’s important to make time for some hobbies too!

Photo added as it’s probably the last one o took with my ever reliant smartflash!

Just thinking about potentially getting some new lights after nearly a decade of these ones! Like the idea of non mains powered ones (although I know there’s the argument of recycle times etc)

Hope everybody’s well, and am hoping to become a bit more active with the photography again!

Hi Shaheed, nice to "see" you again:)
Yes, we all need our hobbies, work is always there (especially in your case) but we must never allow it to dominate our lives. I'm guessing that you've had your SmartFlash for AT LEAST 10 years, based on the fact that it's now 7 years since I retired.

Studio lighting choices are now extremely limited, as the market is entirely dominated by Godox now.

Hi Garry

Good to see you’re still here!

I think you’re right - they probably are over a decade old! That said, still working and no immediate rush to change. I just like the idea of less trailing wires. I must confess I like the look of the a300 Godox (not sure the a200 has a fit for purpose modelling light).

Like all gear, it’s a nice to have, but still got more than enough to take decent photos! Along that line, I’d love one of the new Sony/nikon mirrorless cameras but again my old d800 still does a good enough job!

That's a lovely shot Shaheed, well done for that :D

great shot! can you tell me your setup so I can carbon copy it with my pooch please

Hi

Nothing too complicated! Took it a couple of years ago, so a bit hazy on exact details but…..

Black pop up background (you know the ones that you have to wrestle with to fold up again). Octa box slightly off centre, camera left (ish) from the front. Soft box from behind camera right 45 degrees ish pointed towards the subject to give a bit of separation from the black backdrop. The ever reliable (over a decade old @Garry Edwards) Lencarta smartflash.

D800 with an 85mm lens. F8 ish to make sure features are all in focus.

Most important of all, my eldest daughter was the assistant to help get the dog’s attention!

Great to see you back Shaheed - been a while. :)

Was that doggie pic taken with the Samyang 85 that you sold me?

Ooh no, but I LOVED that Samyang 85mm f1.4.

Probably the best bang for buck lens I’ve had!

This was with a sigma f1.4 art……although I suspect you’d get a similar result with the Samyang!

Morning Shaheed!
I was away from TP for a time myself .. nice to have you back, . hardly seems to be anyone here doing portraiture any more

Morning

Good to be back! I did notice there wasn’t lots of studio style portraiture in the photo section.

I hope to do a bit more at some stage and not just the dogs!

Just do it!!!!
Funnily enough, we are going to a wedding in the next few days and their photographer has let them down….

They’ve asked if I’d step in for a few ceremony shots as a back up in case they can’t get a replacement!

Although it’s made me feel the d800 is a bit old for this kind of thing (which I know is ridiculous)

You know as well as me.. it ain't what you've got, it's what you point it at!
