Who’d Have Thought Cancelling TV and Internet Contracts Would be So Easy

This week I have cancelled both Sky and BT. I was expecting the usual telephone battles with their retention teams, but both were nice as pie. What a nice surprise!

I did the same with Sky last week - pretty easy even though I was angling for another deal but they wouldn't give me the price I wanted. Just hope they come back with an offer by mid Dec!

I got the impression when I cancelled Sky last month that they were resigned to their fate. The young lady didn't put up much of a fight and all but admitted that they were not offering value for money in today's 'stream everything' market. I know that there are things that Sky provide which others don't but IMO it is not worth the £60/month I was paying (at least it wasn't to me).

Cancelling a TalkTalk account was the polar opposite. :(

Got rid of sky and live TV years ago, just stream of Amazon and Netflix now.
Amazon is what£70 a year and includes shipping, photo backup. Netflix is £5 a month. Absolute bargain compared to a TV licence and Sky subscription.

That's exactly what I did - it's a no-brainer IMO. I really can't understand why people pay for TV licences any more - there's just no need to.

Yeah I cancelled Sky 6 months ago - it was pretty easy. I listened politely to the chap's save routine and then explained that I'd taken a new contract with Virgin months before and had just waited for the earliest possible day to cancel. After that he knew he had lost and so the call only took about 10 mins.

Then they started calling at least once a week for the first 3 months until I pointed out how illegal this is. Now they just write every couple of weeks....

Seems like no one can be bothered anymore. I wanted to stop a car insurance policy from auto renewing a few weeks back. Usually this is a dawn out process that takes at least 20 minutes.
This time, the phone was answered straight away, I said I wanted to cancel and gave the policy number..

”ok sir, that’s cancelled, we will send your proof of ncb through shortly, Thankyou, bye”

Whole call from dialling to hanging up took less than 5 minutes.

We're sorting out buildings insurance. Had a flood Aug 2020, the following years policy was £580 instead of the previous £400 - fair enough. This year they want £1050 (different insurer). If I go online I can get insurance from a name brand for <£600 that will match or exceed the previous insurer. A Plan, our broker, put up no fight at all when I said the quote was too high & I'd look elsewhere.

They will....

Exactly. You only need a TV licence if you watch or record live TV. I haven't done so for over twenty years. The money that would have been 'wasted' on a TV licence now pays for my Amazon Prime and Netflix subscriptions - at least I now get something for my money.

TBF, you said you couldn't understand why people pay for a TV licence. If you don't watch or record live TV, then of course you don't need a licence but a hell of a lot of people do.

Finally got around to cancelling Sky tv today, I wanted to keep the Broadband. It took 4 calls, 3 of which I ended as I was on hold for 20 mins a time, the last time I finally got a human!! After telling him what I wanted done he was about to pass me on to another dept [cancelations, which there is no direct line through too apparently] - I told him I'd been on hold for ages so what he did was ring me back, put me through to cancellations and let me hang on hold from there [so the call wasn't costing me] - 45mins later, after listening to 'Lovely day' , 'Don't worry be happy' 'Celebrations' and 'Stand by me' in rotation between promo adverts, I finally got my second human :D He did try to offer me this or that but I stood firm, get rid of the tv package nobody ever uses and just leave me with Broadband and the compulsory phone line. It's knocked €45 off my monthly bill - only keeping their broadband because sadly it is one of the more stable/relaible over here in Ireland, nowhere near as many options/good deals as you guys have in the UK. We watch nothing but NF/Prime or downloaded movies here the tv was getting use maybe an hour a week and that was mostly re-runs the girls watch [Friends/Modern families kinda stuff] which can all be had using alternative apps [we have a decent Android tv box]

Bit different over here, if you have a tv you must have a licence, even if you never watch live tv.

Always check here for local numbers.

For instance for Sky, 0800 1512747
Or 0344 241 4141 that's just two of many for them.

What's the definition of TV over there, and how much is the license. Could you not use a monitor? Yeah you might be limited by size.

According to the Irish broadcasting Act 2009: "“ television set ” means any electronic apparatus capable of receiving and exhibiting television broadcasting services broadcast for general reception (whether or not its use for that purpose is dependent on the use of anything else in conjunction with it) and any software or assembly comprising such apparatus and other apparatus"

Atm it is €160 annually

That's showing as a blank page for me here - but would be handy if the numbers are listed someplace as it's like needle in a haystack trying to find direct contact details on their site, really seems like they purposely make it very difficult for anyone to cancel. If you fall behind on your bill however, you'l find they get to you very fast

So it is, just go to the main page and at the top search by company or known number it'll give you free and local numbers.
