White Vinyl Matt PVC

Don't think its on the website -

"Tel: 01417732166 ask to speak to Emma or Steven, just ask them about the white PVC that togs have been ordering and they'll tell you which one."

Ta:)

Sorry I haven't read this thread a long time. To those who wanted a piece, sorry I've chucked my cuttings already.
To answer some questions, one side is a bit textured and reflective, but the other side is smooth. You shoot on the smooth side anyway.

You can ask them to put eyelets on one side.

Hope to see you this week TG.

Edit:
Just taken a photo of the bg here:

Thanks strobemonkey. So in reflection, are you happy with it? (He says with fingers crossed after placing the order.)

Yes I'm happy with it.

Hi folks,

Just wondering how those of you who have ordered this are getting on with it? Kalibre, I'm assuming you find it much more crease resistant than the regular fabric backdrops you were using?

Thanks in advance,
John

Hi Bulldozer, have replied to your PM. Yes it is more crease resistant but it will still crease if stood on or something. :)

This looks great. I am using white card for my light tent backdrop but for close up shots you can actually see the pile (or is it tooth??) of the paper. Is the smooth side of this really smooth? And would it be too reflective for doing product type shots? Also, is it a pure white colour? Sory for all the questions, it does look like what I need though :)

It is very smooth and quite matt so the reflection is quite low. It is as close to white as you'll likely need for most shoots.

Soz, I forgot to mention that it is quite heavy (11-12k for 5 metres if I remember) so be prepared to use a fairly sturdy backdrop system/mount.

get the feeling that they have had this conversation a millions times

They should reply to enquiries from their web form then! grr....

Now got to get me some of them reflective shower board type efforts and I'm sorted.

Glad to see you've got your white vinyl....did you manage to get some reflective shower boards at a reasonable price?

No, unfortunately. I understand I may need to spend £150 on something to get a good result but I'm still looking for a cheap option. If we were in the US we could do it for £20, so I'm convinced that there has to be something in this country that's cheap, solid and glossy. The search continues.....

If spraying stuff, see if a local garage coud do something with car paints and laquer in a booth that they can bake off. just ask for the cheapest paint and laquer and go from there.

I'm considering clear PVC or perhaps a glossy white tablecloth for the floor. Clear PVC has the advantage that you can change the colour of the floor, although I'm not sure how durable it is.

I'm not sure how clear PVC would work in terms of the back edge. Because you'll see through it the edge that is being refracted may well cause a grey edge if it doesn't blow. Would be worth a try though.

I am sure there must be something equivalent to the American stuff (I think they refer to it as "Tile Board"). I know you can get white faced hardboard pretty cheap here - but its a dull matt finish .

If you find something suitable be sure and let us know - I'll do likewise.

I read on a US forum that the UK equivalent is melamine faced board e.g. the stuff white boards are made of.

Tile board sold in the UK is the waterproof grey stuff used when tiling a wet room. I think the UK equivalent of US Tile Board is shower board .

I wonder how durable this stuff is? Although it's not cheap either and the white is twice the price.

Think you need to speak to Diddy Dave or Dellipher about the board, as i'm sure they use it in there studio, i think Adele may even work for the company who stocks it.

Dellipher did mention in one of her posts that it was circa £150 at trade prices so a cheaper solution would be nice. I might pop to halfords tomoz and experience with some high gloss car stuff.

This is where being a greenhouse worker does comes in handy as we get through miles and miles of the stuff every year. After covering 4 acres, we've got enough left over to cover another football pitch.
Here it is, all freshly laid down in one greenhouse a month ago:

It comes in three versions. Sheets that are white on one side and black on the other side, sheets that are white on both sides and we have some that are nearly transparent.
I'm pretty sure that this stuff would be perfect for photography projects. :)

Sounds interesting,

Is it shiny, how wide and how much? :)

Here's a photo of a sample of white PVC panel I received recently:

It costs £35 for a 1220 x 2440 x 2mm sheet. Unfortunately it's £25+VAT for delivery (or collect from Essex). More details here: CASupply.

I've been looking locally but haven't found anything yet.

For those who were interested about the white vinyl, here is my experience so far. I ordered mine from Tony Beal a couple of Friday's ago (around 4pm). I got just over 6 metres for c£69 inc delivery from them in Scotland. It arrived in Hertfordshire on the Tuesday morning (was actually sent out Monday) despite all the snow! Well impressed with the service received!

Popped to Wickes for some piping to fix it to - ended up with a 2.75m length of black down pipe for £8.75. Then using strong double sided tape, stuck 3 pieces side by side across the top width of the vinyl before rolling the piping over that to get it to stick - this meant there was a bond almost all the way round the pipe.

Rolled the vinyl a few times around the pipe before sliding my background support pole through the pipe and clamping it to the pole to stop it unravelling. Then raised the stands to the desired height and hey presto, the vinyl backdrop was up!

There were a few dirty marks on the vinyl when it arrived but nothing that didn't come off with a bit of Mr Muscle and a damp cloth - it's now pristine.

Planning on using it for the first time this coming weekend at a Ladies Night dinner/dance so will let you know how well it all performs but it looks like it should be ideal.

Thanks to the OP and to Kalibre for the info in this post - certainly saved me a bit going down this route - getting on for around a third the price of a Lastolite White Super Vinyl set up when you take into account delivery etc.

John

Hi TG,

It is 2.5m wide and I bought just over 6m (better to have too much than not enough I thought!).

Looks perfect for portraits and I've certainly worked with narrower backdrops before now.

Cheers,
John

Here are my experiences so far (in reply to Smurfette's follow up thread)

Looking forward to using it some more soon.

Yeah, I rang up recently and was told £10 per metre.

Also, it's £25 delivery now to anywhere in the UK.

:(

Hey, Lee, just noticed where you are in South Wales. If ever you want to share the cost of delivery from Tony Beal.....

I'm going to get mine from bessel now, they come mounted on the aluminium poles which are about £22 to buy so it actually works out cheaper.

I know the thread was started 2 years ago but 100% increase on delivery and
nearly 70% increase on the product, I bet they won't be selling as much as they used to.

The bessel prices are superb on their softboxes inc grids.

I might have to take a trip up to their shop and have a look sometime.

I was looking at one of their strip soft boxes that worked out cheaper than the chinese ones. Would be interested to know what they are like.

Has anyone used white melamine as a white flooring? It is not too expensive and the main thing I am missing now in my studio having just got a piece of white board 4'x5'.

Wow, shame that tony beal have cranked their prices, this is good stuff. It used to come rolled on a card tube as well, no need for fannying about with staples or anything...

I've used mine in anger for 8 or so months now, for lots of events as well as studio work, so I've shot thousands of shots on it.

You will always need a very sturdy grip setup for vinyl, it really is heavy stuff. I use two heavy duty calumet (ie rebadged manfrotto) stands and the manfrotto telescopic backdrop pole.

My key complaint was a verrry slight sag that I experienced in the middle of the vinyl - absolute non issue for shooting white, but made knocking it to grey an issue, and the tones that you got if you did just weren't quite the same as the lush grey of paper - maybe doesn't make technical sense, but you can see it.
Could fix the sag by replacing the card tube with a scaffolding pole or something I guess, wasn't a massive issue, you'd just sometimes get 'V' lines down the sides a tiiiiny bit - a bit of gaff tape to the light stands usually sorted it.

The vinyl itself is thicker than the stuff that lastolite will relieve you of £200 for a roll of...
