Yes
I have been talking to a company that makes vinyl tarpaulins. They have sent me two samples of their white vinyl.

The first is matt and the second has a slightly glossy appearance.

I want to order some to make a train for the hilite I bought from FITP and want some advice on which is likely to produce the better result.

My first thought would be the slightly glossy one as I am more likely to get better shadow detail on objects near the floor. It should also pick up more light from the hilite behind it.

So matt or semi gloss ?

Can someone describe the lastolite trains appearance for reference ?

Genuine Hi lite trains are slightly glossy. Hope this helps :)
p.s with a curve cut into the ends to match the curve of the hi lite. CW velcro :)

Cool, semi gloss it is. I'll let you all know how I get on...

Just to add to this....

I went to the local Fabric shop and asked about White Vinyl...... (semi shiny)

I got 2 mtrs of white vinyl x 54" wide @ £7.99/mtr

I've had a quick play with it....... I haven't managed to get it WHITE with the flash... but nothing a little dodge won't cure....

But I'm interested in your findings.....

Phil

The quote I received is 19oz white vinyl, matt one side shiny the other. 2.5m wide. £7 per linear metre. I have ordered 3m x 2.5m cost all in inc. postage (it is quite big/heavy) is £48.18.

I'll place the order and should get it in by next week.

The place I ordered it from is www.tonybeal.com

I don't think many have managed to get the Hilite train white without an extra light on it. Just playing with mine today, will post pics tonight

I have a lastolite highlight and it requires a light on the train:thumbs:

So, as a newbie to this type of thing...... does this mean an independant light soley for the train ?
i.e.
1 - lights for inside the hilight behind subject
2 - Softbox light in front of subject
3 - Another light for train ?

thanks in advance?

Newbie myself but yes, bear in mind that if you dont do full length then you dont need it.

I place an old battered sb24 on the floor blitzing the train

Hi hodders

There are lots of different tarpaulines on the Tony Beal site, do you know which one you have the samples for?

Stringy

Yup - the 19oz White PVC and the White Panama PVC. The former is £7 per linear metre (2.5m wide). The later is £7 per square metre so 2.5* more expensive.

I am going to order the 19oz stuff as it is matt on one side and low-gloss on the other which will give some flexibility.

If you phone, speak to Morag Litton she was lovely and really helpful.

Yup, with you on that one.......

Further Question...... what angle/distance are you using with the flash for the train?

e.g. not too far off the ground, pointed about a foot or 2 infront of the subject?

Cheers

Phil

The flash sit's on the train about 2 foot from the hilite and on the left or right hand side.
