Can someone please advise what the pitfalls are in buying a lens in a white box?

There are no pitfalls :)
'White box' lenses are supplied in kits and some retailers split them from the kit so they can just sell the body.
So it's the same lens but without the fancy retail box.
 
What about guarantees etc? No problem either?

I bought my Canon 24-105L IS f/4 from Kerso, it came in a white box and all of Ian's products are covered by a Canon UK warranty so there so there is total piece of mind.
Be careful as to where you purchase from, if the lens is a grey import then it will not have a UK warranty.
 
Arr I see......I was going to go with Kerso anyway so thats good news. Thanks again :)

Its for a 24-105 too BTW

That's not true.
 
Some grey imports aren't covered - but it depends on the warranty wording. Canon has a mixture of regional and global warranties.

A white box lens is usually part of a camera kit - ie body and lens, and the lens has been split. Should be identical in contents to a retail boxed lens, but if buying new I would not expect to pay the same as a retail boxed lens for a white boxed lens. Secondhand makes little difference.
 
You don't get grey import lenses and they all have an International warranty. In the event of a warranty claim Canon UK only require a valid purchase receipt.

So tell me what grey import photography kit do Canon UK honour the warranty on?
As far as I am aware, none of the Canon kit the likes of onestop digital sells comes with an international warranty.

I'm not questioning you, it's just that I have read differently even on here.
 
Well blow me down with a feather duster, admirable is 100% correct.
I've just spoken to Canon UK in Elstree and provided a valid receipt is kept, they will honour the warranty on a lens no matter where it was purchased.
 
so...in a nutshell...I can buy any 24-105 and with a valid receipt, canon uk will repair in the event of a claim?

Yes and Ian is a lot cheaper so don't worry about it and place your order :)

You don't get an instruction book with a white box lens though :D

I think the only problem with white box lenses might come at resale time. Some folks are put off becasue they don't know the score, think it's a second, or a grey important without warranty etc etc.

That's wrong of course, but the prejudice is there.
 
I'll be in Seattle in a couple if weeks, although prices are not as good at the moment, a saving can certainly be made.
I just need to convince my good lady that I will need a Canon 100-400 when we get to Alaska :)

Basically Grey market items are sold at too good to be true prices. In the case of camera bodies they rarely include more than the body (IE: no cables, no battery, no charger) and never include a Manufacter's warranty.
Any item I sell comes with all extras, instruction manual and 1 year Canon warranty valid in UK.
Hope that puts your mind at rest.
