Which would you keep, nikon 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8?

Yes
I have currently got a D90 and 3 lenses. I have the 35mm 1.8, tamron 28-75 2.8 and have brought a 50mm 1.8 off the forums here. The 50mm arrived today and I'm really pleased. The focusing seems faster with the 50mm rather than the 35mm or is that just me?

After setting my camera on a tripod and taking a the exact same shot but with the different lenses, there really isn't that much difference between them.

So I am thinking about selling one, and namely the 35mm, what would you do? Keep them both, sell one? If so which one?

I have both, and if I had to get rid of one I would keep the 35. I prefer the slightly wider FOV, and AF works on my D40 as well as D90. I definitely agree the screw lenses focus faster, but then they're also noisier. I've never noticed any real difference in IQ between the two, but it's not something I've specifically looked for. To me the 35 feels better built too, but that could just be down the fact that it's bulkier.

If not for the D40 issue I still prefer the FOV of the 35.

If money was an issue I'd keep the 50.

By "difference between them" you are referring to the field of view?

I'd keep both at the minute as it's not really hurting anybody is it? Go out and shoot with just the 35mm and 50mm and see which you use more often, you may find the 50mm good for portraiture and the 35mm for street work etc, I never brought a 35mm because I thought my 50mm would do it all and I'd save £150 however I don't so much regret not buying one but there are times when I think "oh I wish I had a 35mm" but that was it areas where I needed a bit more FOV. I've purchased an 18-55mm lens now so I use that for wider shots and then my 50mm for everything else.

Keep them both for now and shoot with them to see which really isn't needed and then make a decision.

I have the 35 and 50 as well and I have uses for both but to be honest I am a little disappointed with the focus speed on the 35 compared with the 50, the screw focus on my D80 with the 35 is definitely faster. I'm wondering now wether I should have got the 35 f2?

keep both BUT if you ahve to get rid of one it would surely be the 50mm?

From same shooting position...with a 35mm you can crop in and get the same pic as a 50mm .. but with a 50mm you can never get the same pic as a 35mm thus you keep the 35mm for the best of both worlds..

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I'm going to keep them both for now and see how I get on. I mainly shoot portraits and very rarely take a landscape shot. I may take one if I'm out with the kids but it will be mainly a snapshot kind of thing anyway.

If I wanted wide angle when outdoors then my tamron goes down to 28mm.

I'll keep going with both because your all mainly right and I don't need to get rid of one but may in the future. The missus wasn't too happy with me buying the nifty fifty but hey, it was only £65 :)

Will be getting some use from them both in a house this weekend so I'll test them out there as well

Thanks for your comments

Keep them both mate, unless you absolutely have to get rid of glass it's always worth hanging onto them, the fifty was a bargain too!! :-)

Lol it certainly was :p

If you're equally happy with the results from the 35mm and 50mm then sell the one that will buy you the most beer.

really loving the 50 at the moment.
going to keep them both for now and maybe sell the 35 when i want to help fund another photography purchase

i have both the 35mm and 50mm.the 35 was bought for landscape/townscape and the 50mm for portrait,i have found the 50mm little use as i have an 85mm and prefer that for portrait.however the 50mm was cheap as chips so i have kept it as a back-up

so i would def keep the 35mm
