I am just wondering what operating system you would choose to install on a new system? I am thinking about building my own tower at some point as I am sick of using my laptop for editing, it is so slow when converting raw to jpeg! :gag:

Absolutely no question: win7

But the OS has far lower impact on processing speed when compared to the processor....
 
Windows 7, no brainer. Only for photo editing though. For everything else, linux :D

I'm still using XP for the simple reason that I bought a copy years ago and it's sufficient for my needs, but if doing a new build and buying, 7 all day long.
 
Without doubt win 7.

Massive improvements over Vista and XP. XP support will end soon.

XP 64bit was always buggy whereas I've been using 64bit Win 7 since the beta releases and they've all been great.

Using a 64 bit OS (and being able to address the extra system memory) is an inexpensive way of really speeding up a lot of image editing and file conversions.

The cost of DDR3 RAM is fantastic at the moment.
 
I love my non-buggy XP64 but have and would always use Win7 64bit in a new build.
 
Thanks for the replys everyone. I am currently using vista premium, on this laptop, and it is a nightmare. Constantly crashing and slow to load up anything. I have used windows 7 on my dads advent verona netbook, and had wireless issues on that. Also my brother has 7 on his laptop, it seems alright. I am being very picky on what new system to go for, I want it to be the best I can get, which is why I am looking at doing it all myself. Looks like i3, or i7 is the way to go. Also would windows 7 ultimate be worth the xtra cost?
 
if you have a legit version of vista then get the win 7 upgrade to save you paying the full whack.

What he said. Unless you want the ability to log on to domain neyworks (99% home users wont) then home edition will do the job. Besides bitlocker in ultimate is useless due to some major flaws.
 
WIn 7 without a doubt and you should be aiming to get 64 bit edition as most modern PCs/builds will have capable hardware.

Are you a student or know anyone who is (kids, nephews/neice, etc)?

If so, then you can get an upgrade version for much cheaper.
 
Yep,

Win 7, 64bit then you can whack in as much memory as the motherboard will allow.
 
Definately Windows XP for one very good reason, my business program runs on DOS (the very best for my work) and any windows program after that doesn't do DOS.

what else would i have to check to see if Win7 will upgrade my Vista Home Premium....?

i have

AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+ 2.81 Ghz
Memory 4GB
32bit OS

whatever all that means .......:cuckoo:

or do i need a new PC...?...:lol::lol:

I use Vista 64bit on my main system. I have Windows 7 on a separate hard drive which wont boot since installing the service pack so i have just not bothered touching it since. Just a bunch of photos on that drive which have been lost but i'm not bothered.

Vista gets my vote any day.

It happens to be my business and we are doing ok thank you. Other later programs are rubbish,it would take years to get the same information each time on anything up to 10 different pages. With nearly 5000 clients on the books and having to get to a clients information then different parts within that is a NO NO


We occassionally need to get information very quickly and with DOS its all on one page.

Later software is crap . I have even approached several programmers and for what I want they just can't do it under windows. It seems windows is very inflexible and will only allow what I want by doing it on several different pages.

Never heard of it to be honest Neil and I dearn't risk loosing what I have on my computers to try anything new out. I have 6 backups, ok may seem over the top but beleive me they are necessary.

I may be old fashoned but I have the opinion of "if it ain't broken don't fix it" But thanks for pointing out an alternative

I think you've just been unlucky with the programmers you've approached. If you can do it on DOS, you can do it on Windows, however I wasn't suggesting that you changed your software, merely I found it amusing that it would only run on DOS ;)

Thats good to know. I have read somewhere that windows 7 needs a fair bit of ram to run smoothly, is that true or is it coming from people running it on a small amount ram to start off with.
 
You will find Windows 7 needs less RAM than Vista. In general it's faster and more stable, definitely the one to install, especially 64bit version.
 
Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks again for your input on this topic. My new build pc is going to have to take a back seat for a while, my current laptop totally burned out leaving me with no pc. But I will be taking delivery of a nice new windows 7 i3 laptop with 8gb ram on thursday.

While I remain a fan of MS-DOS having spent over a decade developing MS-DOS applications and until not too long ago was still using some DOS software every day (and I still give technical support to users of our old MS-DOS products as well), I'd second what others have been saying that if it can be done on one screen in a DOS program it can be done in one window in a Windows program.

However, you have a system that works for you so for now there is no need to worry about it. I'll only add that the 32-bit versions of Vista and 7 do still have the NTVDM so can still run MS-DOS applications, it is only the 64 bit Windows operating systems that do not.
