Hi guys,...

Struggling to decide on which lens,... money isnt an issue this time but I am a bit of a consistency freak and was aiming for an entire Sigma bag of lenses so thats the main hurdle,..

Anyway, which one from the list,...

Sigma 14mm f2.8
Sigma 10-20mm EX
Nikon 14mm f2.8
Nikon 12-24mm f4

Considering the crop factor the 14mm's will effectively be 21mm, which is wide still and if Nikon go full frame it will be a worthy investment. So has anyone got any experience with these and if so how was it. I know a few people here have the 10-20 Sigma. If anyone has a 14mm in the cupboard let me know,...

Cheers,

King.

I have the Sigma 10-20mmm - it's a great lens, very sharp.

Don't rule out the Tokina 12-24 - superb build and IQ.

Another vote for the Sigma 10-20mm, well made, sharp, and well priced.

Heres some examples of what you can achieve with this lens from Petemc, always use this thread as an example as its his images that sold me that lens (sorry Pete for using your thread).

And a more recent shot of Petes.

I think I will be getting the Tokina 12-24 after Xmas ! Cant afford the Nikon 12-24...

Thanks,

Paul

I am a fan of the Sigma 10-20mm as well.

I haven't got one...Yet but will acquire one in the New Year.

A mate of mine has it and he has taken some stonkin' pics with it. :)

I've had no regrets buying or using the Sigma 10-20, an excellent lens.

No worries dude :) Saves me posting ;) Sigma 10-20 ftw. I've had so much fun with it.

I've used a friends Sigma 10-20, excellent wide lens. Might be getting one for myself after chrimbo.

Has anyone got anything but the sigma? sounds like a cracker with almost everyone having one. will go test it out,..

King, if you did a search before you posted, or even just looked down the page.... you might have seen this thread: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=14286

:p

Appreciate the link and info but I did search and it didnt turn anyhting up for the majority of lens' I specified. I was hoping those who had the kit would come out of the closet (except the 10-20 users) but nevermind,...

Thanks guys.

King.

Another vote for the sigma 10-20. Voted best consumer lens I believe by the editors of newspapers and magazines, I can't recall the groups official title.

OK no seriously..

Have also only heard rave reviews of the Sigma 10-22 (10-20:thinking: )

Heard the Nikon 12-24 lacked greatly in sharpness...Have never worked with one though but then I suppose that bit of honesty comes as no surprise:D

Never heard or read that the "Nikon 12-24 lacked greatly in sharpness" before & I read LOTS of reviews before buying a supa y-dangle
There's a good comparison HERE between the four main players - as its on a Nikon Forum you'd expect a bit of bias but you can make your own mind up
Also HERE there are lots of links to reviews of all thing Nikony ...
Paul ;)

Go back and read the review you supplied off the first link in your post.

I never claimed to be the expert but your Nikonians confirmed what I thought I'd heard... :bonk:  :bonk:

I have & I still don't see where it claims the Nikkor "lacked greatly in sharpness" - The article states the following about the Performance:
PERFORMANCE

With both bodies, autofocus with the 12-24mm Nikkor is accurate and precise. The lens has a nice feel in the hand, and its construction quality is much better than lenses such as the 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D AF. It’s not quite as solid as a 17-35mm f/2.8D ED AF-S, but that’s also because it’s a much smaller lens.

Images with this lens have excellent contrast at all apertures and focal lengths and correspondingly fine color rendition. Center sharpness is very good at 12mm, and excellent at the longer focal lengths or when stopped down to f/8 or f/11. At the 18-24mm focal lengths, images were spectacularly sharp – about as good as it gets.

The edges of images taken at 12mm and wide-open are noticeably softer than the center when viewed at 100% in Photoshop, but this improves quickly upon stopping down. There is very little light fall-off with this lens, in fact it was the best of the bunch, and was virtually undetectable. As with the other lenses, there is a noticeable softening of images due to diffraction effects at f/22. At 18 and 24mm, this lens yields excellent sharpness in the edges, especially when stopped down.

Optical distortion is controlled very well in this lens. There is slight barrel distortion at 12mm, and no apparent distortion at longer focal lengths. At the wide end, chromatic aberration was apparent in images taken with the D2x, but it was minor. Users of Nikon Capture will find that if you turn on “Color Aberration Control”, chromatic aberration will be automatically removed from RAW files. We didn’t see any adverse impacts from this operation and would recommend turning it on and leaving it on

Indeed if you go to the Summary the chart reads as follows:
12-24mm DX Nikkor
  • Best Optical Performance
  • Lowest overall distortion
  • Best Build Construction (jointly with the Tokina & Sigma)
  • Best Low-light Performance (jointly with the Tokina)

Found a old Photography Monthly magazine today.
Got in the mag a lens test of wide-angle zooms...Here is the results !

1.Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC 91/100
2.Tamron SP AF 1-18mm f/4.5-5.6 88/100
3.Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM 87/100
4.Olympus Zuiko 11-22 f/2.8-3.5 86/100
5.Tamron SP 17-35 f/2.8-4 SP Di 82/100
6.Nikon 12-24mm f/4 DX G ED 82/100
7.Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX DG 81/100

Sigma was the best overall performer, a good price and the weight and the size of the lens !

Maybe its a lens to have a good look at if you are thinking of buying a wide-angle zoom lens !

Thanks,

Paul

I'm now thinking of getting the sigma 10-20 thanks to you lot. I'm interested in using it to make slightly distorted pictures of cars and bikes. Has anyone got any examples of pictures where they've used the 10-20 or simliar for the same purposes? Can't imagine Jessops letting me take it on walkabout round the toon to try it out and I won't be able to judge it properly in the shop.

Cheers
Kev

Im sure these arent quite the effect your looking for, but heres some vehicles I shot in the summer all using the Sigma 10-20mm, excuse the blown out skies - were just grab shots (honest;))

I did a few tests with a 10-20mm - Don't know if this is the sort of thing you're after? Sure makes my Touring look like a stretch limo!

Righty, probably much to everyones dissapointment I am going for the Sigma 14mm f2.8. I loved the feel of it over anything else and the image quality is exaclty what I want.

Thanks to everyone for your help and sample shots. Muchly apreciated.

King.

EDIT: The place I want it from hasnt got stock and wont for a while,... going to rethink,...

Yeah good idea, he will fall in love with me as I will be ordering more than one lens,... Going to be replacing my nifty fifty with a 30mm f1.4 and my Nikkor DX with a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX DC Macro (new model). Thats a good £1000 minimum.
