Which wide angle lens

i have a Canon 7D and looking for a wide angle zoom lens.for a trip to new york i was thinking of the Canon 10-22 f3.5-4.5. on asking at a well known photographic retailer today i was told more or less not to bother with this as at the lower end i would get images looking like i was using a fish eye is this correct. any help or advice will be much appreciated.

The 10-22mm is a fantastic lens, and if thats the focal length you're intending to use, then it's arguably the best option. For a few quid less, the tokina superwides (don't get the 10-17mm as that one is a fisheye zoom) are well regarded, and the sigma offerings are decent as well.

Whilst it is very wide and you will experience a small amount of distortion, it's not even close to the fisheye look

It's deffo duff info.

There should be many example images on the net should you do a search.

Personally I don't rate the Canon as the best in class. I had one and thought that the Sigma 12-24mm I replaced it with was a much better lens. The Canon is wider though and every mm has an effect at this end.

These wide angle lenses are generally much better corrected than your average mid range zoom and as such will probably show less distortion. Tilting the lens up or down will give you a leaning building effect :D but this is just the perspective and not distortion as such and deffo not what you'd get with a fish eye lens :D

I took this shot at 12mm on APS-C DSLR, no true distortion and no fish eye effect :D 10mm will be equally non fish eye :D

I use a 7D with a Sigma 10-20, does the job quite nicely :)

Or better still, speak to the manager, point out that you were given totally incorrect advice and suggest they look into their staff training. Actual bricks-and-mortar camera shops are potentially valuable resources and a little bit of effort helping to nurture them might pay dividends in the long run.
 
Thank you I have been in the same store a few times recently and have only ever walked out once satisfied the info I have been given is correct so I knew you guys on here would be able to help

Do you think this will be a little too wide it is for new york cityscape
 
The 10-22mm is a fantastic lens, I have used one since they first came out with no problems at all:canon::banana:

With all the lenses mentioned being zooms, you're going to have a flexible approach, so for cityscape type shots, all of them should offer good coverage. It might be worth having a bit of time looking at other peoples examples on flickr, and seeing the lenses they used - if you're not used to flickr, ten a lot of the shots have their exif info in tact, and clicking on it will give you the option of seeing what camera and focal length was used

As an example, a quick search of groups came up with http://www.flickr.com/groups/urban_new_york/ but there are plenty more groups for you to search

I got a canon 10-22 a couple of weeks ago after a lot of research on the web looking at the canon,tokina and sigma.

Only been out with it a couple of times so far and I'm more than happy with it:)
 
Another possible alternative is the Sigma 10-20mm. I've got it and am very pleased with it...

The Tamron UWA gets a good following as well
 
i have just got the The New Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16 F/2.8 lens from hdew cameras at a good price and use on my 600d there are a few photos on my flickr account taken with this lens , i would highly recommend it
 
Canon 10-22 is by far the best performer in this area. I own one, plus a Tokina 10-22. The latter is used solely for astrophotography. I with I could rely on the Tokina for daytime shots, but it is just too prone to flare.
