Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 - £350
VS
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 - £450
VS
Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 - £430
VS
Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 - £600

I'm stuck I want one of the above, I think.

I like the Tamron because it is cheap, I like the Tokina because it is fast, but am slightly worried about limited focal length.

The canon is in there but unless it is vastly better than the others I won't bother because of the price difference.

What about the Sigma where does that fit in?

Any other suggestions?

Camera is a 50D

Hi Chris

When I shot Sony I had the Sigma 8-16 lens and it is an absolute belter. It is obviously wider than all the above, super sharp, super fast AF, not f2.8 like the Tokina but how often does anyone ever need such a wide aperture UWA ?

I would put it top of my "wanted" list if I were you.

Just my £0.02 worth.

Best wishes.

Gary

Thanks for the reply, I thought the 2.8 would be great for shooting indoors and at night, but was wondering if it is too much of a compromise. That 8 - 16 looks really cool, another one to consider!

tokina or canon

Care to elaborate?

Cheers, will check those out later (Flickr blocked at work)

tokina or canon

+1

I would whittle that list down to those two also. The Tokina is not only fast but IQ is nigh flawless.

The Canon if you can afford it.

Canon 10-22mm is a fantastic lens. I think there is one for sale here for about £370.

when I checked all the reviews the canon had the edge on the rest including the tokina and if you are happy to go down the import route you can get one cheaper, flash cameras http://www.flashcamera.co.uk/canon-1/ Ian, who many use have it for £539 and panamoz have it even cheaper. So in my world a simple choice buy the canon, on my crop body its my lens of choice and I love playing with the angles and the results it gives.

So, you'll be getting a Canon then!

I own both the Canon and the Tokina. The Tokina gets used for astrophotography only. If that's what you're interested in then get the Tokina. Otherwise be nice to yourself and get the Canon.

ive got the tokina 11-16 and its a fab bit of kit.... whilst i was looking into pruchasing lens i was reading endless reviews and the tokina came up trumps in pretty much all the reviews i come across

Got put off the Tokina 11-16 because of the limited range. Their 12-24 could be another option but apparently suffers from flare.

It seems if you get a good Sigma then they are a fairly good buy, the problem is thats "if". If I recall correctly someone on here had 2 different lenses, one was soft down the left side, the repalcement was soft down the right.. he gave up after that.

When I was looking it was generally accepted that the sigma f4-5.6 was sharper than the f3.5 constant version.

The Tamron I think lacked IQ when it came to CA if I remember rightly.

All this meant I did the same as the chaps above and went with the Canon, its a very nice lens.

Canon 10-22, great lens, slight chromatic aberration at 10mm, but Lightroom auto corrects that.
Second hand they are £300-400

I've got the Sigma 10-20mm and really like it, I get great results with it and would def recommend one. The Canon is a very nice lens, but oes carry a premium with it.

If you have a look at the flickr account below, these were taken for my mate with the Sigma lens...

Before I moved to FF, just the other week, I had the older version of the Sigma 10-20; the f/4-5.6 version, and I couldn't have been happier with it! Excellent lens for the money.
