I am currently looking for a wide angle lens. My current collections consists of the Canon 28-135 IS USM, Sigma 150-500 and the 50mm f/1.8.

I think there are 3 basic choices :-
Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6
Tamron 10-24
Tokina 12-24

I know the Tokina 11-16 is supposed to be very good but that leaves a gap in my lenses between 16-28 so not ideal.

Has anyone tried out these different lenses?
I have looked at various reviews and other peoples comments but they all seem to vary wildly as to which one is best.

No competition, the Canon 10-22. (Well, out of the three I tried - Sigma 10-20, Tokina 11-16 and the Canon).

Interesting. I haven't done much research on the wide angle yet but from what I heard about the Canon it is a good lens. I will keep this tread in mind when I am ready to purchase a wide angle. Right now I'm trying to pull off a 70-200 f2.8 I.s. 2. I might have to settle for the first version but as soon as I'm done I will be looking for a wide angle to complete my set (for now. :/).. lol

I don't have anything at the moment. 28mm is the widest I can go.
The canon is a fair bit more expensive and it's not a lens I will use regularly so I wish to keep it in the £300-400 price range.

I would take tokina 12-24 or 11-16 every time over Sigma or Tamron (particularly tamron)

+1

If shooting on a cropped Canon, I would only consider the Canon 10-22 or the Tokina 11-16. Don't think focal ranges covered, think what is a good quality WA and go with it.

For me, I have a 17-55 f2.8 which is fairly wide and high quality so focal range is what on after. There is not much point in duplicating what i already have. The quality needs to be on par with my other lenes as well. I will look at the other makers as you have suggested. Thanks.

10-22 is a fine lens, although I think the Tokina 12-24 represents brilliant value because it's a constant f/4, is superbly made and is cheap, especially used.

Something worth considering. When it comes to WA the question is, 'How wide is wide?" Choose a lens that is 10-12mm at it's widest, with preference being towards 10 (it makes a difference).

It's not really a case of being put off one lens because you have a portion of the focal range covered on another lens (as gblades has stated against choosing the 11-16). For me this is largely irrelevent. With a WA one finds that shooting at the widest range is very often the norm and the rest of the focal range is 'just there' but in my experience pretty much pointless. When I had the Sigma 10-20 it was pretty much at 10mm all the time, with maybe some slight zoom for adjustment.

I would opt for the Canon 10-22 persoinally (or the Nikon equivelent if shooting Nikon) then the Tokina 11-16. I wouldn't consider the Sigma 10-20mm again.

I have the canon 10-22 and the tamron 11-18
quite happy with the results from both
the canon is better build quality imo but at a much higher price can't complain at the tamron for it's price

Another vote for the Sigma 10-20mm lens

For what I use it, it wasn't worth the expense of the Canon compared to the Sigma, but I am very happy with the Sigma

Thanks for all the great feedback. It's not going to be a lens I will use a lot so I just need to decide now whether to get the sigma or pay the extra for the canon.

That was the position i was in and opted for the sigma and don't regret it ....

Having used both the Canon and the Sigma on a job over the last few months I can say, to me, theres very little difference in the image quality, with the Canon just taking it on razor sharp pics.

However, if it's getting little use your best bet is the Sigma, although you can pick up a very good used copy of the Canon for between £400-£450 now

Sorry to gate crash your post but I didn't want to make a new one up when this was exactly what I was looking for. But which lens did you go for in the end the f4-5.6 or the f3.5. Also would it make much difference? I would love to be able to buy a wide angle lens for my holiday at the beginning of july and also would like to not spend too much money on it. (Yes for me the Canon would win hands down) but unfortunately finances will not allow at the moment :(

I went for the f4-5.6. At the widest setting where it's used most there is little difference and the lens is £100 more. If I were to do that then I might aswell have spent another £70 and just have got the canon.

Thank you, I agree with your logic, I just wanted to see if I was going to make a mistake with that logic or not :)
