I am looking for a wide angle lens for my EOS 40D. I have narrowed my search down to the Canon 10-22 EFS and the Sigma 10-20. Which one is the better lens ? Is the Canon worth the extra cost ? Any help in deciding would be appreciated.

I have the Sigma. Having seen so many examples of fine picures on this forum from owners of such I thought why spend more on the Canon. At my level I am very happy with the Sigma/cost so it's something to take into account. If you get the Sigma and aren't happy then you can sell it (without loss) and go for a Canon.

I have the Canon use it above and underwater - excellent quality for the cash I would say...have not used Sig so could not comment. Always pays to buy the the best...check out www.the-digital-picture.com/ for detailed Canon review. HTH:thumbs:

Another vote for the Canon!

I love my Canon 10-22mm too, without doubt the results have made me smile more than any other lens I own, but as for the price difference, I doubt you could ever justify it.

If it's going to be with you a long time what will you feel happiest with?

I was just lucky/daft enough to be able to afford one while their cashback offer was on! This was the 24th picture taken with my 40D since I bought it and my 10-22mm lens but don't let it put you off.

Another vote for the Canon...

I have the Sigma 10-20, build quality is good. If you get a good copy, its a brilliant lens. I've read good reports on the Canon 10-22, maybe its better if you get one.

Vote for sigma here, tremendous lens, can't fault it.

I think the results speak for themselves, they are both good lenses. There are loads of threads on the internet comparing the two, take your camera to a shop that stocks both and see if you can play with them.

Another option is the Tokina 12-24mm

They are all good lenses, so no doubt you will be pleased with whatever you purchase. So the question really is whether the canon is worth the extra?

I have the Sigma and think it is a great lens, but can't vote for it over the others as I have never tried them.

From reading this thread over and over again over the months, I've come to the completely non-tested conclusion that the Sigma is perfectly adequate, but the Canon is better.

That's probably about right!

Can the Canon be used on full frame cameras? (I understand the Sigma can't be).

17mm on full frame is nearly just as wide as 10mm on a cropped sensor

10mm on a 1.6x crop is technically a 16mm lens. If you put the 10mm on a FF body its 10mm but you can see the lens so it doesn't work.

Narrowed the search means you've already eliminated the Tokina 12-24? I like this lens as it is constant f/4.

Between the Canon and the Sigma. Another difference is that the Canon has f/3.5-4.5 while the Sigma has f/4-5.6. So the Canon has a slight advantage in max aperture. While the Sigma has the ability to be mounted on a FF camera (but probably has super heavy vignetting at wider angles).

So, what would my 12 - 24 Sigma be on a full frame......?

I've used the Sigma 12-24 on full frame, and the view you get at 12mm is amazing!
However, when I put my Tokina 12-24 on full frame, I see black corners until about 19mm.

Unlike the Canon 10-22, the Sigma 10-20 should be able to be mounted on a FF camera, but you would probably experience black corners at the wider angle. Just realised I already mentioned this above :D

I have the Sigma 10-20 and its my favorite lens, however if I'd had the money, I would have got the Canon...Just a personal thing though

Also, the Sigma 10-20 cant be used on a ff camera as it is a "DC" designation lens, but the Sigma 12-24 can.
