Afternoon all,

Last week we took delivery of a new TV unit and new sideboard. However, they are unfinished, so I'm looking at applying some wax onto them.

I've looked at all the options from varnish, to danish oils to wax, and wax is the way we want to go - plus we don't want to alter the colour of the wood (granted, even a clear wax may change it slightly).

Anyway, what would be the "best" stuff to go for? TBH, so far I've only had a look at what Wilkos has to offer, and it looked like a paste in a tin. SWMBO read somewhere that the sheets that came with the furniture says to use a "wax block" (or something along those lines).

look at water based yacht varnish i believe its called SADOLIN ,you just brush it on leave it dry then apply several coats exactly the same way .it drys hard as nails and gives a deep deep shine .really does what it says on the tin

Varnish is very different to wax, which soaks in. Varnish leaves a coating on the surface which protects.
It is great in some situations, but not so good in others...

Normally use Colron beeswax... gives a great finish. Put it on with a cloth leave a couple of hours and polish with a clean cloth. Repeat 3 or 3 times with s couple of hours in between.shoukd last many years. Reapply as needed.any natural beeswax will do really.

As you say, any natural beeswax will do the job - Briwax is the one that is stocked in my local place which is why I use that over Colron, but I imagine there is nothing between them.

The one I mentioned was developed for yachts ,as traditional varnish and waxes tend to peel over time exposed to sun and sea ,,whatever is used in this stuff doesn't and the finish is better than any I have ever seen
