Hi there.

i need to invest in a new lens similer to that of th 18-55 kit lens.

i have a canon 40d and a 70-400 f4L and a nifty fifty allready so need something to replicate that of my kit lens but with much better image quality which i no longer have access too.

dont really want to spend more then £200 new or second hand but can push the budget up if there is something that is going to be a lot better and last me longer.

thanks
Axel

Hi,
my vote goes with the Sigma 17-70, it is almost never off my 40d. Check out my pbase site for sample images, most were shot using the 17-70 and either my 20d and more lately the 40d.

any idea on cheapest place to get one? is it worth getting one imported from hong kong?

I have the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 as my walkaround lens on my 40d and think it is an excellent lens. Does come in abit more than you want to spend though

another vote for the 17-70 - its generally always on my 400D Wide enough for most landscapes and only a 2 pic panorama if not.
Its sharp through out and quite sharp wide open.

I'd vote for the 17-40L, but you'd need to go second hand and probably up the budget too...

i have looked at the 17-40L and it does look very nice.

how much better would the quality be compared to the sigma 17-70?

There is the 17-55 f2.8 canon, but a bit out of the budget. it is an ef-s lens though, so no use if you upgrade to fullframe.

im pretty sure there is a tamron and sigma equivalent which will be a bit cheaper

I recently bought the Sigma 17-70 and first impressions are extremely good!

recieved the 17-70 yesterday and first impressions seem really good. feels solid and the macro functions seem really good. havent had a chance to have a proper play yet as ive been busy with work and with all the rain i havent had a chance to get outside yet!

will post some results when ive had a play but so far so good

Why not buy the EFs18-55IS at about £100 very good image quality and a direct replacement for your kit lens?

I've just replaced my kit lens with a Tamron 17-50 f2.8, I'm very pleased with it, very sharp wide open and only £250 new.
