If I was going to buy photoshop, which version should I go for??? Am a beginner photographer but very PC literate (am an IT teacher but havent worked with photoshop/photoshop elements before).

I can get photoshop elements 6.0 for free from a friend who no longer uses it, but how much better is photoshop than photoshop elements????????

Am not rich (I wish!) but have got some £ to buy photoshop if it would be worth it

Any thoughts welcome!

Can you find some way of getting on the accredited list of students? Yoiu get a whacking discount if you can do that. PS6 is years and years old....

I would just go for the latest elements package . cheaper than the full photoshop and still do raw files.

Andy, what is this list & who holds it????

I just got the student version of PS which is the full version it just means you are not eligible for any upgrades but you get it at a significantly reduced price. You can order it through the Adobe website (there is a link to the education page) and once you have ordered it you have to provide proof of student status. I just scanned a letter from the college I am attending and photo ID. I think teaching staff may also be eligible so it may be worth checking the terms and conditions.

Hope this helps. :)

The latest student version. Or CS3 student. You can get them for reasonable prices nowadays.

If you google it, you can get it cheaper. PC World Business has them available as open box but complete for £110.

You might also consider photoshop element 9. It is considerably cheaper. The version of photoshop is cut down, but you get a cataloguing tool that helps you organise your photos (the equivalent for Photoshop is lightroom 3 which is extra again). A brief feature comparison between the two photoshops is here: http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/photoshop/f/elementscompare.htm

I use Lightroom 3 (which does nearly everything you want to do simply for photos) and only drop into PS5 occasionally when I want to clone or edit out something or do something specialist.

You get a cracking discount with Lightroom 3 as a student too (circa £75).

One other thing to consider is if you have an old PC cs5 might struggle. Not likely though seeing as your an IT person, but i'd rather say it and look stupid, than have you buy something that doesnt run well.

download the free photomatix 4 and get the serial number off youtube.i`ve just done it and it works

thanks for the info guys, I think I might go with photoshop CS5 extended. I so wanna get started with taking better photos and learning how to edit them. I am looking into getting some tuition from a local photography company so will also pick their brains about software. I know the style of photos I want to be able to create, I just dont know how to set the camera up to get them, or how to edit them! Sounds pretty bad coming from an ICT teacher, I am world expert in teaching kids powerpoint etc but not much use in this case lol!!

p.s. could someone tell me how to put a photo in my message and I can let you see what kind of effects I want to know how to get????

You need to upload the photo to flickr or another photo sharing website then get the image code... on flickr you view the picture then hit the share this menu and its html or bb code, on photobucket i think it drops down under the image and is called the image code... copy and paste it and it should show in your message.

OK I am going to try to upload some photos. They were taken by an aquaintence of mine who is setting up as a photographer. I dont know how technically good they are, I just know that I like them and that I want to be able to produce pics like this. Just dont know how to do it!

you've got the link but to embed it, hit the drop down 'share this' menu above the image then click grab html/BBcode. With my flickr it's the BBcode i use... copy and paste this code and it should embed it.

Unless you do video, image analysis or 3d I'd just get the normal version, from a photographic point of view you don't really need the extended.
