Can anyone please advise me on which type of filter i should use to protect the lens on my nikon 18-55 VR lens. I have looked up the two nikon versions, but the cost is prohibitive, to me anyway!!. Any help appreciated:)

Thanks Brian

I wouldn't bother, the lens isn't worth enough to justify the cost of one that won't degrade your photo's. Just be carefull.

It may not be worth anything to a "rich git", but to me a pensioner i should like to afford it some protection.

I think the point he was trying to make, is that you need to do a trade off between the cost of a decent UV filter (as they tend to be used just for protection) against the cost of replacing the lens if you do any damage (which tends to be unlikely).

But if you want to put one on to protect your lens, look at Hoya, they can be picked up for a reasonable price and are pretty good. If you really want cheapies check out www.7dayshop.co.uk/ their own brand filters are very cheap.

Thanks you Barbs, i will look at the Hoya range. I would feel happier removing dust or smears from a filter than from the lens itself that is all.

thanks again:)

They are a lot more durable than you think, certainly more so than the soft coatings of astronomy scopes, removing dust and smears from the bare lens is not a problem.

To prevent smears in the first place I would recommend that you always use the lens hood, as well as blocking stray light, it keeps fingers away from the glass.

Hoya are made by another company Kenko, if you come across the Kenko filters they are the same as Hoya, but usually cheaper.

Just to add you need not worry about a bit of dust, have a look at the images this slightly damaged lens took LINK

Thanks for the info Martyn, christ i hope my lens never gets into that state!!!!

I bought a Hoya from http://www.ukoptics.co.uk/ today and they have kept me updated and have sent it out very quickly. They have some 52mm Kood Skylight or UV filters for £6.67 if that helps, postage is extra.

I know but it puts things into perspective.

Looking at the scale of the damage I doubt a filter would have saved it.

That broken lens is so "perfectly" broken it's hard to imagine it being an accident!

Thanks again for the replies guys, learning something new everyday:)
