Hi guys. I am currently looking at upgrading my 2m wide collapsible studio backdrop as i really need 3m width for shoots. having a quick look on ebay, im confused as to which type of backdrop is the best?

Im looking to spend around £100 on a backdrop with stands. Should i go for muslin, woven, seamless??

Also whats a good weight for the backdrop. it seems to be around 140-150 gsm so i have no idea if thats good or bad?

Im looking at something like this:

Thanks

Seamless paper for me personally. I wouldn't have the energy to try and iron the creases out of fabric backdrops. Plus I hate ironing almost as much as I hate washing up.

Thanks for that input charlotte. What do you look for when buying seamless paper? Am i right in saying you need to cut and throw used/dirty paper away?

Also is it the same as fabric in terms of lighting it up etc?

I also use paper and I find it pretty durable, I use it with my kids and as long as they don't run about in dirty shoes it stays clean enough.
3m is big though, I can fit it in my car (3 series estate) but only just!
You might struggle with your budget though, you are looking at about £40 a roll. Plus I'd say you need to spend £100 on a background support system as something flimsy isn't wise with all that weight high up. I use the WEX one.
I got my last paper from http://www.creativitybackgrounds.co.uk and the service was good.

hmm ok, im thinking to avoid using a roll since i dont have much space for storage. John, how good are them stands? there many stands like that on ebay but im concerned they are flimsy?

I may possibly buy a muslin backdrop and them stands.

thanks

The thing that put me of muslin was the creases. Do you really want to be ironing it?
What colour were you thinking?

The stands are excellent, more heavy duty than a lot of the others on eBay.

Yes, rolls aren't that portable. It's swings and roundabouts. Paper tears / vinyl is heavy / fabrics crease. :-)

hmm i know. i was after a white background. i thought if its relatively crease free i could just blow out the creases with enough light. my current collapsible background is a felt type of material so was thinking something similar?

Yes, you can blow out creases with enough light - but this relies on having enough distance between subject and background for the reflected light to fall off sufficiently before it hits the back/sides of your subject.
Also, creasing can be managed. The trick is to have the background under tension so it's taut, and to then spray it with water from a plant sprayer or similar.
I have NEVER ironed a background - life's too short for that:)

Paper is by far your best choice, but other types of background are perfectly usable.

Yes those should suffice but even other stands of inferior quality would be able to handle average home conditions with a light material.
