Just bitten the bullet and ordered a Giottos vitruvian CF tripod as a travel 'pod and will report on my opinions of it when it's arrived and I've had a play.
My main tripod at the moment is a Manfrotto 190 Pro (Old type with the slightly fiddly horizontal column) which wasn't particularly cheap (£80 a few years ago) but is stable and not light, topped with a 322 RC2 head (trigger type ball head) - very easy to set up and rigid enough for my kit and needs. The whole kit is a bit heavy for long treks (but I'm too lazy for that sort of trekking too, so no great problem!) and for taking on holiday, so the CF option for the vitruvian seems a good idea (mainly for the travel rather than the trekking) - I would like to put a Manfrotto head on it to keep all the supports RC2 compatible as far as QR goes but since it'll be mainly travel, I can suffer with swapping one QR plate over before we go.
