Hi all,

Looking for myself a tripod and haven't a clue which to go for.

I have a Canon EOS 50e (film SLR). I won't be lugging it too far, ie, i'll practically drive to where i want to go - maybe walk a little bit, so weight isn't a major factor, but i don't want one so heavy you have to drag it!

Fairly tall would be nice, I'm 6ft 4, so ease of looking through viewfinder would be nice.

I'm an amateur, so not too fussed on fancy gizmos or the latest gear (2nd hand will do).

Price wise, top of budget is about £50, but spending less would be nice.

I've found an old tripod in our attic called 'Jessops Atlantic Tripod Bravo 2', but it seems to have abit missing where you attach the camera to, so i think this is useless.

Any help / advice much appreciated?

thanks in advance

Jim

Up until around Christmas I was using an asda ten pound special (Hama star 42 I think it is) and never really had a problem with it, ok its a bit flimsy, but my main gripe was the height without the centre column raised (which made it even more unstable!) so I decided to upgrade and after handling one in jessops, I settled on a Giottos MTL9251B (which included a head) for around a hundred quid and I can thoroughly reccomend it, the height is eye level (for me at 5'10) and its sturdy and light and the build quality is excellent. I got mine for less than £80 from amazon but I notice they're now back up to £110! For around the 50 quid mark I guess you would be looking at Velbon or something like that...... even still slightly over budget I'd suggest maybe something like this-

Hope that helps a bit :)

A Manfrotto 055 would probably fit the bill. The operating height with a head is around 69 inches

Have you checked out the RedSnapper range yet... ... linky is on the TP Home Page... :D

:p

i have a snapper and can also vouch you wont find anyhting like it for anywhere near the money, its simply brilliant

Can't really add anything to what saxk said, on sheer value for money they can't be beat :)

Yep another thumbs up here for Redsnapper, I love mine. If you wanna have a look at one before you buy I'm only next door in Bradford.

i have a velbon ultra maxi L its compact. folded length is 46cm and max length is 162cm. now i complained about the pan head, which i replaced with the redsnapper ball head (amazing piece of engineering, and it's made in china :D) but i find the twist and lock mechanism really good, and very fast, compared with the clip ones seen on all most 80% of tripods and also it's much sturdier.

the velbon is very light (i leave it in my rucksack and hardly feel the weight increase), yet it's sturdy enough for me to put a bit of body weight on it to stabilise the tripod. now the above mentioned the redsnapper, that has the same mechanism for the legs and it seems to have multiple attachements (which is great for various surfaces).

I think the best way to decide is go out there and try a couple yourself and find out what suits you and how each feels, and then find a deal online and if not go abck to the shop and haggle.

this may sound dodgy, but get a good "head"!!! it's worth the investment-ish for a good head, and then move up the ranks of the tripods when u get a bit more comfortable with tripods and £50 for a set of legs is probably ok. but u need another 50 for a ball head at least

I would go for a Red Snapper tripod, top quality for a great price...

Are you sure that it is not just missing a tripod head, which can be bought separately, just a thought.
